Show abe be montezuma mine ine of ulab guiab S 2 1 1 V T IS fairly safe to say that there is hardly a mining camp in the west or in utah toda today thatis that is attracting more deserved attention at the hands of capitalists and investors than is bingham the old reliable F a wealth producer of note situated a short distance from I 1 salt lake city in the early history of mining in this inter motin mountain tain region realon we had our bingham OA and we have our f bingham bingam today for years v this grand old camp has poured its streams of mineral wealth into the channels of trade and comit commerce erce the district has made its mining minina kings and its millian millionaires aires it has made fora tunes great and small but the I 1 fact remains that its mines have been barely scratched as s yet an assertion fully corroborated by the successes which have attended mining opera J eions within its environments of recent years by the magnificent ent ore reserves opened in boy the bos ton con can the Bing bingham larn copper and gold the united states and many other of the mines of this richly mineralized see section which which successes ces and time the and well spent energy t and money rewarded has resulted in the past two years in the building of two big amel ands and three reduction reductio ti works for i t the he treatment of bingham n ores the ore depositions of bing z ham and the of oe the e c camp are not confined to any y particular section and producing and paying mines exist along the course of main bingham canyon up to the highlands from the old winne muck below markham gulch up to the old jordan galena in upper highland they are to be found in markham gulch in bear gulch in carr fork gulch in butterfield ltv t V t IT jc V MOUTH OF MARKHAM GULCH THE BINGHAM CANYON JUST ABOVE c found over a arda ea of country the ledges being be ing so strong 80 hume rou s and so extensive that many miles ires might be traveled before passing the boundaries of mineral wealth mines that are mines Pines in every sense of the term are to ke be foun ou fidan ct m every c canyon anyon and gulch they canyon cannon in pine gulch in the cottonwood side and summit and on every mountain from time to time it is tle the intention of the mining review as in the past to make special mention of individual M mines ines and properties arties in bingham as well as in other camps throughout the state and this s intermountain country the subject of this artile article being the montezuma mine in markham gulch the montezuma holdings embrace two claims the montezuma and the montezuma Munte zuma no 2 the former being by tl feet in size patented while the no as ais a full claim for which a patent survey has been ordered the two locations joining each other on their sidelines they 1 aro are located but three quarters of a mile from the confluence of markham mulch gulch with the main bingham canyon the montezuma has been owned and worked by W J X and john since the year 1895 since which time me it has produced in the neighborhood boodon of in the precious metals the character 01 ol of the output bano sulphide ore carrying average values of 35 per cent ceat lead LO 0 ounces silver 3 in gold and a small pereen percentage tage in in copper the value of the output being curtailed during the years 1896 7 on account of the decaire in lead quotations which touched with a general range of at the present time however lead is quoted at 4 per pounds and as treatment charges in 1895 6 when compared pare d with those of the present dayi day show a difference of at least 1 pe e ton in lavor favor of the producer besides 1050 in his favor on account of advanced lead quotations it will be seen that the decrease in smelting smelling sm elting charges and the enhanced value of lead as well as of silver gives the producer an advance over what the same class of ore would brin bring five years ago the montezuma as well as other lead producers producer 4 par participating in the benefit aris arising ing from these chan changed cred conditions the formation of 0 the montezuma is a true fissure in quartzite with a lime filling the strike of the ledge being north and south bouth with a slight dip to the west in the operation of the property a tunnel has been driven in on the vein for a distance of feet at a point feet in from the mouth of the tunnel an upraise was made to the surface a distance of feet the upraise being t made on an ore chute which will be more particularly barly described further on near the mouth of the tunnel a shaft has been sunk in the country rock atthe at the foot level a station was cut and a crosscut cross cut of thirty feet made to the vein on which a drift arif t was run for a distance of feet from this level a hasteen has been sunk to a depth of fifty feet from tle the bottom of which another level of feet follows the vein into the mountain the entire workings 11 gg with the exception of the shaft being in in mineralized ground besides which a good many feet of sto pinc I 1 has been done as would be expected in a property which has enriched its owners by an output amounting to nearly in the operation of the property it has been demonstrated that two big ore chutes cut down through the vein one of these designated as ore chute no 1 has been followed to ta within fifty feet of the surface from the tha level from the bottom of the a distance of feet from this point the ore hasteen has hasI been scoped the average of the ore body being two feet in width the other chute called the back chute has been worked out from the main tunnel up to within feet of the surface a distance of feet this chute is thirty feet thick and carries with it a solid body of oi ore three feet in width both of these chutes are very strong t and well defined giving every evidence of permanency and continuity with still greater depth in chute no 1 in the from near the bottom of the he shaft four feet of solid lead ore is now showing bv which is overlaid over laid by three feet of good milling mineral the seven feet of shipping and second class product being beina exposed in the drift to the north for a distance of fifty feet on the montezuma Monte zurna no 2 claim there is a parallel vein this is a contact in lime and quartzite the latter formation being 1 the of the th e lode several open cuts and low shafts have been made alono along the course course of this vein all of which show strong ng amner fineg aliza tion stratified with stringers carrying galena and carbonate ore in the development i orthis lode the I 1 management will run a crosscut cross dross cut f from conj the main tunnel of the montezuma zum x claim this crosscut cross cut which will be olven driven to the west should cut the ledge within feet and at a vertical depth of feet and at this depth and with such excellent indications on the surface there is every reason to believe that a fine body of ore dij will be uncovered in the future operation of the mine it is the intention of the management to continue sinking in the shaft to a depth feet below its present level when a crosscut cross cut will be run to the vein arid this will be done as soon as aa the property is equipped with cc a large steam hoist which will take the place of the small ne now in use |
