within a year or so but bub within that time concentrates and other modern plants such as steam and electric hoists for the mines have been put in and capital has been interested to such an extent that it is a question of only a short time when the camp will become one of the foremost in the middle west the ores as stated are rich in the four principal precious metals in e t a I 1 s while the placer product rivals in richness to that of the golden days of california in this connection it may be mentioned that the largest gold nugget unearthed in the state was washed out at bint bins 0 b with K R D mcdon city and his frequent coming in with such quantities of gold soon attracted attention and many followed him to the diggings but it was not until 1871 that anything like a genuine influx or boom bjoin set in then thousands flocked to the canyon most of the placer ground had been taken up and the new comers turned their attention to the quartz ledges which abound on both sides of the canyon the float was rich in itself and the veins when opened proved a source of mineral revenue to the miners who had available only the most primitive methods for deduc the concern millions MARKHAM GULCH ON THE R G W RY cuu piu uyer relates some interesting reminiscences regarding the early history of bingham according to mr air clays the first discovery of mineral in bingham then a wilderness hut but now a prosperous mining camp was made in 1864 by soldiers of general connors armyl army no attention was paid to the matter iatter ri at the time shortly afterwards however a brother of mr air clays while on the road with a wagon train camped near where upper bingali bingham am now is and discovered the thee placers ile he located extensively and took out large quantities of dust he marketed in salt lake ing it it was sometime after the news of the richness of the district become known before the first mill was put in the promoters were buell and bateman who were interested in what was known as the old utah property at the upper end of t e gulch their venture proved most successful and the firm reaped hundreds of thousands of dollars the success of buell and bateman was excelled c by bristol and daggett the latter a civil engineer who took charge of the now famous Winn amuck mine and erected a smelter r a company being formed to finance and mining on a modern plan is now in operation hundreds of men are at work and companies backed by millions are doing the operating and pushing the district to its proper place in the front row the very marked decline in in silver a and nd lead quotations several years ago brought mining oDe operations rations inBi in Bingham naham camp almost lindst a to a standstill and but little was done of consequence in this locality for a long time with the eke exception eption of the enterprise inaugurated by samuel newhouse and thomas weir in the wor working kino of the highland boy now known as the utah con for its oxidized gold ores for the treatment of which a fine mill was erected in carr fork foric gulch the plant being in op a short time before the woark workings ings penetrated pene trat ed beyond the oxidized zone disclosing vast zones of copper T this h i s discovery opened a new era for bingham ar and id resulted in placing this section ton n a basis that has since girven it great fame at home ad and abroad as being one of the greatest copper producing sections of the west 11 with the he change in ore characteristics act acte a change 6 in methods was necessitated a huge smelting smelling sm elting L plant was erected in salt lake valley installed a long long k wire wire rope tramway was and now the company is mining great quantities uan of low grade copper ores which are treated at the smelter in connection with the oxidized gold ores in the upper workings of the mine and the plant is sending bending out over pounds of gold and copper bullion weekly in addition to which goodly shipments of silver and lead ores are being 0 1 p made to the open market the gratifying success attendant upon the carrying ll 11 on of this enterprise d suit an stimulated others to follow now remarkably heavy operations in copper mining are being carried on within the confines of this splendid camp the consolidation of the old jordan galena the niagara and the old telegraph mines under the title of the united states mining company was one of the direct consequences of this success the boston C con on by samuel newhouse a proposition of mammoth proportions was next in order while the bino bingham 11 ham gold copper company a similar proposition is running neck and neek neck with the enterprises mentioned in the race for mineral wealth so that it will be seen that bingham is in a wonderfully prosperous condition when compared with its gloomy outlook of a fe few v years ago many other mining n ventures within the environments of the old reliable are also showing encouraging conditions the shawmut has been developed into amine of wonderful possibilities and now has a modern mill of its own the fortune has passed into an incorporation and is now treating its low grade ores at its own reduction works the tined to rank as one of the great copper producers of the camp the alamo recently acquired by john T hodson and associates and which is looking exceptionably well the st joe with its acrey acres of valuable ground in which the vein has been opened up in several places the vespasian hoodley a proposition of more than ordinary promise the the Winn amuck the lenox the ben butler the nast and benton the greeley the copper glance the louisa S the west mountain montezuma neptune yampa columbia last chance and a score or more of mines and prospects all of which give promise of excellent things in the future the town of bingham in itself has made splendid progress during the past few years it is but a few miles from salt lake city andis and is reached by a branch of the rio grande western railroad which is now extending its line from the lower to the upper portion of the district distri cV the place has its schools and property on its strike for a distance of 1200 feet before it was known that bingham possessed such wonderful wealth in its copper deposits the mine mine was worked for its oxidized ores but now that it has been demonstrated that underlying these surface deposits vast zones of sulphides sulp hides exist carrying pay values in copper associated with the precious metals mining on a different system is being pursued and it will not be long now before it will be fully demonstrated that this is one of the choice copper producers of this intermountain region in the way of development the mining review is informed the workings in the property would aggregate a mile at least the most important of which is the 1200 foot crosscut cross cut tunnel which has ext exposed the vein on its dip at a depth of feet below the deepest of the upper workings and while no has been done as yet it is learned that tons of good ore have been taken out in doing development work only and this ore is now being transported to the W y V A f allin V aa L r A a e C J r Y BINGHAM COPPER AND GOLD MINING COMPANY THE NEW SMELTER JUST BUILT BY THE dalton lark has virtually changed hands and its future outlook is bright indeed the silver shield which has been transformed from a prospect into a producer and which now ranks asa as a dividend payer the butterfield mining company has but recently put in a mill the red wing I 1 near the mouth of markham gulch grows bigger and more promising with every foot of development and evidently is the making of as great a mine as there is in the camp the Redwin redwing 11 cr el extension a comparatively new proposition is showing up splendid volumes of ore ashwork as work progresses in its operation and exploration under the able management of ed mccarrick the york on york hill in which orem son are heavily interested is steadily improving with development and will doubtless doubtless loon eoon repeat its history of a few years ago when it was a heavy producer and a dividend payer the midland in which A some very high grade ore has been found during the past year the congor soon to to have h vve a mill and which is des churches and places of amusements
