Show campaign campaign of speculation in quartz mountain properties seen in large number of companies formed to exploit them by A J moore ra for or the better part of this year a great deal of attention has been devoted by nevada promoters san r francisco ran cisco reno and salt lake brokers to booming the quartz mountain district nevada As there did not seem to be sufficient substance to all ail that was beins being said and done to justify endorsing the new camp the mining ining review decided to leave icalone it alone pending development very recently the brokerage fraternity lins has been ribbing up excursions to the new district and the country for many miles around has been plastered with locations and anywhere from forty to possibly a hundred mining companies have been organized to exploit the merits of the district and well sell stock because the mining review lins has had little to say about it heretofore it takes this occasion to handle the following historical and descriptive write up of the camp by A J moore of reno who in the light of all that has ham previously been published undoubtedly covers the situation just about as ar 4 it is im the publication of this article does not mean that the mining review is yet able to see aee real groundwork for a legitimate boom but the story Is given space so mo that the reader may understand just what 0 0 has been and still is happening editor 0 I 1 0 1 speculation seems to center in the quartz mountain and 0 0 0 chalk mountain districts of nevada quartz mountain is 0 located about forty five miles east of fallon on the lincoln 0 0 1 ll 11 highway ishway and then twenty y miles south chalk mountain is about thirty eight miles east on the lincoln highway and g then hen four miles north quartz mountain is very much in the limelight not only an on account of its production but in that it is seldom that so many any noted mining men have gone into a district at so early I a stage of development first came louis D gordon of aund round mountain fame and through him george wingfield then i 16 followed allowed J grant crumley of tonopah To A A codd of 01 reno keno and fred cole son of thomas F cole formerly of iga the au cole e ryan syndicate then came A hirshberg of n 11 williams company the most widely known real estate estate dealers of san francisco next came frank stall of the widely known camp of national 1 the story ory of the camp in brief is that about eighteen months fron ago s s arentz now united states congressman oapl nevada istook took an option on some claims about two and a grade to ship under he failed to raise P conditions then prevailing annett the money with which to make his first payment then lc walker and pledge took a lease on the ground tenly ten meantime arthur thomas of salt lake city had writ I 1 turn louis into D gord gordon to look him up a property that he could f mended his oil mcany company the san rafael gordon becom deal this ground and a deal was made just before the w their was completed plated Pl eted annett walker who had bought out level partner pa ner struck nick a shipping grade of ore on the foot six wel their 1 lease ease expired aired december 1925 they 1 hey had weeks KS of mining left and rushed every miner and truck that they c could d get hold ofin six weeks they y took out over this attracted attention to the district trucks were employed day and night hauling to fallon all of the ore was running over 50 per ton and some around per ton the royalties on the ore shipped met the first payment on the property as gordon and thomas had optioned option ed the property subject to the lease enters george wingfield the san rafael was then reincorporated incorporated re and george wingfield on the advice of louis gordon took over control of the san rafael As soon as it was known that george wingfield had gone into the quartz mountain district mining men from all over the country went to quartz mountain corthe for the purpose of securing claims meantime louis D gordon for george 6 wingfield had located or purchased the claims that are now the property of the calico mining company san felipe mining company exchequer quartz mountain mining company man 0 war mining company and the standard quartz mountain company before he had closed the deal to purchase the control of the san rafael mr wingfield between A hirshberg personally the dunn williams company and their following the argentum was well financed A little later A hirshler hirshberg Hirs hber g for himself and following b purchased a half interest in the J grant crumley companies namely the hercules abax and giant this control was turned to the argentum mining company which is a holding company as well as an ail operating b mining company in view of the financial standing of the people back of the argentum mining company this company is one of the strongest in the district about the time that annette walker talker began shipping ore from the san rafael a prospector named dan murphy murph y fred cole of tonopah To the son of thomas F cole of new york in a lease on ground not far from the san rafael ground mr cole backed him financially in the lease and about the time that george wingfield bought thel the san rafael mr cole was so well satisfied satisfied with the showing in the murphy lease that he purchased the group and incorporated the quartz mountain metals company co m pany he has since installed heavy machin machinery eryon on the property and has purchased the murphy interest in the lease and is stations at the and foot levels on the foot level a drift was sent southeast and undercut the ore body from which annette and walker took their fortune and is now driving to cut other ore bodies that were opened on the level after the passed into new hands A drift for the same company purpose has been started from the station at the foot level meantime a crosscut has been sent out about feet from the foot level where it opened into a big vein which outcropped cropped out at tile the east of the shaft this vein proved to be thirty four feet in width and a drift along it went out thirty feet from the crosscut and opened another body of shipping y grade ore the crosscut had revealed milling ore all the way across A crosscut is now being sent from the level east to cut this same vein other wingfield holdings since the san rafael was taken over by george wingfield shipments have averaged between ten and fifteen tons per day no effort is being made to ship ore only such as breaks in development all supplies including water for domestic purposes have to be hauled from fallon when trucks go out for supplies or water they go loaded with ore developments on other wingfield properties surface work has beers been done in order to learn the trend rend t of the vein system some years ago a small shipment of ore was made from the nye and mineral claim of this company on the quartz mountain standard a shaft is is down 50 feet and while the company was waiting for the arrival of hoist and other equipment a crosscut was started from the 50 foot level at last reports the face of the crosscut was showing stringers of quartz carrying silver and lead values this is taken to indicate the near approach to an ore body development work on other properties near the san ban rafael include that on the tonopah hasbrouck kenick hercules and quartz mountain metals the hasbrouck was prospected by three shafts twenty thirty and fifty feet el deep respectively i at the 50 foot shaft a 25 h p hoist and an air comar compressor assor was installed it is a two compartment ver ve shaft and will be sent to the foot level and cross cutting started to pick up a series of veins showing n on oni the surface it is possible that one of the veins may maibec be atit by the shaft or at most a few feet of crosscutting cross cutting should d pit pick it up the shaft is now at about feet the kernick also has a 25 h 1 p hoist and tile the shall shaft is 5 down about feet the hasbrouck and kernick have a joint camp and is well provided with buildings and up IP 0 to o date equipment the fred the hercules is listed on the san fran cisco sto stock ck elchan exchange 6 e and owing 6 to the strong 6 backing it has is a favorite with traders Argen argentum turn strong company the Argen argentum turn mining company is located about three and a half miles southwest from the san rafael it holds five claims surrounding 6 the old lodi mine which was a heavy producer many years ago it is being developed by two shafts about feet apart the old shaft was started b by y t dan brennan some years ago when he first took up the claims As he was a prospector working on short money the work he performed was about what might be expected under the circumstances stances A good part of the time he had to work at other properties to earn money for supplies he followed the vein down thirty five feet which showed about three feet of 20 to 25 ore when the property was taken over by the new owners the first work was to straighten out the shaft and to continue it to a depth of feet at the 60 foot level the vein dipped out of the shaft when at the depth of feet the prospects were so favorable that the company decided to start a main working shaft and a two compartment vertical was equipped with hoist and air compressor this shaft is now at a depth of about 90 feet and is expected any day to cut a vein which shows very strong on the surface at a little more depth a crosscut cross cut will be started to intersect two other veins known to exist in the th property meantime dan brennan has been granted a lease on the property and he took as his block of ground feet by feet at the center of this is tre e old shaft in which he first worked as a pros prospector p ector conditions have changed 6 now and he has been able to finance himself for the needed machin ery he had only worked ten days in a crosscut from the shaft when he opened into shipping ore this ore runs about 50 0 a ton and he is erecting a loading platform it is expected that by the time this appears in print the main shaft of the argentum will also be in ore A hirshberg of the dunn williams company and their following together i with george thatcher william |
