Show trong strong plea for stimulation of the mining industry As presented by miles carpenter mining engineer I 1 miles mies carpenter a prominent mining engineer of tucson soil arizona just recently made a strong plea before the 1 i tucson chamber of commerce to have the business public s get behind the mining industry of arizona and to further ithe i the project of establishing a public ore sampling plant to stimulate operations among the small mine owners what mr carpenter has to say in behalf of his own section carries I 1 ies so many pointers that might profitably be applied to A th the e stimulation of mining elsewhere in the west that the aiming review herewith reproduces the account of mr carpenters plea and the resolutions adopted as published an i in the tucson citizen as follows when inquiries are made as to opportunities in min mining tell them the truth urged mr carpenter in conclusion on tell them that mining is Ari zonas leading industry hat companies with capable management and adequate 3 finances bances nances seldom make failures that mining is a highly specialized ciali zed business and should be recognized as such and 3 that hat any proposed mining project should be investigated he same as any other business venture the state has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars n this school and bureau of mines mr carpenter con aued to make investigations possible mining possibly affers P ers the best chance of any of Ari zonas industries the mining industry in general and in arizona par barly lar ly is is just emerging from the deepest depress depression iori any justry austry could suffer we reco recognize ghize that the depression jas as the result of the world war which stimulated the production action to the limit of all metals the sudden end left large tocks of metals on hand with a bankrupt world for a ij arket with general conditions again favorable it is a golden opportunity for tucson to give Ari zonas foremost industry chance to do something for tucson os how the industry has changed we must recognize 6 ge first st of all that the mining indus as s changed entirely with the passing years it is not a kwof se of searching the hills for a rich strike the entire ming ining region of the west has been combed by wave after e of keen een eyed prospectors and if anything g was over ked YOU may be sure it was an accident v rii hc i alth 11 the rapid P depletion ion of the richer metallic or ores es rl uch the has as been going on steadily for the past fifty years united states new methods method si machines and processes ve e been devised for working lower grades at a profit rf I 1 pite p of the rise in the commodity index of prices and ja lc nee e of the cost of items consumed in mining operations I 1 y is cowering 10 of the grade of ore mined seems a progressive r to which no limit cabbe can be set the limit is is whittled iw I 1 lyn wa to a 11 fine point but it t gets ets continually finer what hat we should have dismissed as ridiculous fifteen ars ago is ls now more than fulfilled we imagined that 2 r afi fit c it 1 copper could never be worked now we mine at a 4 ll 11 ore containing less than 1 per cent b V educate men to mining As it Is ID S let the old times of tucson realize that the burro 01 ach b and A sho s vel rel prospector Ps is as antiquated agthe as the stage and 10 ok at and state 0 of f eveln mining ning in its modern stage s nt strive to educate new comers to mining as m ain tim f progress and improvements are of para hatm tion on some fifteen years ago the process of and now concentration of ores was perfected cornes the question of a process for handling complex zinc S ores which are widely y distributed and probably abundant right at the door of tucson dean butler of the state bureau of mines and john carter carter anderson have already done pioneer work in getting the me united states bureau of mines to cooperate with the state bureau of mines to put experts at work on developing this process it is not impossible for some private concerns in in the west have already been successful and recently there came to me an inquiry for a large regular tonnage of this complex ore investigation developed that it was wanted in sweden and the feasibility of shipping such ore from twin buttes to guaymas and thence to sweden is being studied would develop new process the importance of such a process to tucson can hardly be exaggerated san xavier olive camp twin buttes Sier ritas south rosemont greaterville Great erville Saler and other parts of the santa rita mountains patagonia papa rita range oro blanco and more distant mountains in all directions from tucson have showings of this type of ore the operation of even a few of the known deposits would be a steady addition of new money into the trade channels of tucson and who knows but that another ajo may be developed deve 1 still nearer to tucson the tucson chamber of commerce should lend its hearty support to gathering such data as will justify the united states and the state bureau of mines in working out such a process arizona has a wide distribution of ores carrying vanadium and molybdenum so far occurrences occur rances have been officially reported from nine counties oi of arizona southern arizona is especially favored little is known in arizona of the market for vanadium ores As far as I 1 know only five tons have ever been sold steel companies of the united states are paying out millions of dollars annually for vanadium in the form of ferro vanadium it appears that the vanadium ores 0 of arizona cabbe can be put in the form of ferro vanadium at the present selling price of ferro vanadium let the tucson chamber of commerce investigate the matter and if advisable get behind the private interests who would pr produce aduce these ores resolutions are adopted whereas mining is the foremost industry of arizona and the mining industry in general appears to be b e entering a period perio d of activity and development and whereas tucson is the center of a mineral area a already substantially opened and showing immense possibilities if developed along lines of sound engineering and good business and whereas this development would rebound to the im immediate advantage of tucson an and d all of its business enterprises and whereas the chamber of commerce is is the logical i organization to foster encourage and direct the development of this industry therefore be it resolved that the board of directors of the tucson chamber of commerce appoint a strong active mines committee to act under the direction of the board interests inter ests and welfare of directors to serve the community in mining matters and be it further resolved that the following program be recommended to the said mines committee to be carried out as completely as practicable Pro gramme Is outlined 1 securing the cooperation of state and united states bureau of mines to work out a ment method of complex zinc sulphide ores 2 to investigate and if found desirable to have appropriate prop resolutions passed and placed before the congress of the united states asking for a suitable duty on vanadium and ores which are abundant in arizona 3 encourage the establishment in tucson of a sampling works by private interests subsidized to the extent that small producers of ore may receive receive the benefit of carload settlement rates 4 to secure additional surveys by U S geological survey of the mineral areas tributary to tucson 5 to publish and distribute pamphlets giving a brief survey of the mining industry of arizona and its possibilities under proper development to the end of stimulating interest in legitimate mining 6 to serve as a clearing house for dependable information on oil the mines of this section and to encourage the establishment of worthy mining enterprises and to advocate the application of sound business principles to mine development be it further resolved that the membership here assembled seffi sem bled of the chamber of commerce pledge their assistance and support the board of directors in inaugurating the foregoing program |
