Show RICH GOLD BEARING SANDS ARE TAPPED NEAR ALBENA northeastern MICHIGAN and now michigan is laying claim to possessing the foundation for a gold excitement up in the northeastern portion of the state near the town oi of alpena a burg of about people it is reported that an oil drilling venture has resulted in tapping great reefs of gold silver bearing sands at depths ranging from to feet that sampling shows assay values in the black sands of 40 to per ton toil the story is told by the alpena news of august ath a marked copy of which has been mailed to the mining review the story is reproduced so that gold hunters and placer hounds of the west may be informed as to schemes and methods employed by the Michi ganders concerned to start a gold old rush into their section of the country some of it is is serious some of it is seriocomic serio cornic while other features of the yarn to the westerner will read like genuine bunk heres the story A contract has been awarded for the sinking of three concrete caissons chaissons cais sons twelve feet in diameter and two hundred feet deep on the page harrison I 1 and auve aure lands located eleven miles west of alpena on M 10 and immediately south of the farman farm which costly cosily construction will be the first public step on the part of the backers in the reclamation of gold and silver in which they declare this particular area to abound charles J herriman dr samuel T bell and james C walker of alpena are the principals in iii this important development velo p ment of the gold and silver search in which they have been engaged for years and intensively for the past six months with the assistance of mr herriman who has established his home in alpena and has personally supervised the drilling of seven holes under contract these shafts will be located in section 36 township township P 31 north range 6 east and sections 30 and 31 township 31 north range 7 east albena men to do the work A contract has been entered into with albert julian for the sinking of these shafts the digging is to be done in three shifts according to present plans to facilitate completion ion these caissons chaissons cais sons will be the largest ever put down in northeastern michigan b it is believed construction will be in line with tried engineering b methods the forms for the re enforced concrete cylinder will be constructed above the ground around holes which chave ye been already drilled and found to contain the black sand from which the r gold old and silver is to he extracted after the first section of the cylinder has been poured the diggers will start within the circle excavating inside permitting it to settle by its own weight As fast as the cylinder settles additional enforcing reinforcing re will be placed in the forms above and additional concrete poured ft 0 construction of a mill planned simultaneously with the sinking of these shafts construction st of a mill or concentration plant on the beaufore farm will commence according to the announcement actual work is expected to commence in three weeks material and equipment having already been contracted for the mill site will be conveniently near the alpena hillman branch of the D M railroad which passes at the edge of the farm A spur will be constructed to the mill through the farm runs king creek from which plenty of water can be obtained for mill use the present pretentious operations ar are 1 e a climax to the pioneering in this field of mr walker and dr bell it is declared ten years ago they began a search for oil and had it not been for this drilling for oil the present revelation of gold and silver would not have taken place at this time it is believed they with a few others drilled two holes to a depth of over 1000 feet but through ill luck lost the holes and their string of tools during the time they were drilling it is related they called the attention of others to sands which they believed to contain gold they tried to enlist more capital in jn inthe the investigation but were unable to do so herriman herrema becomes interested about four years ago ago b they decided to put a hole down on an adjoining Z farm farin to determine if the same sand was there that had been found at the oil hole this sand was encountered and a sample came into the hands of mr herriman who had it assayed by thomas J dee co of chicago 6 who it is stated found it to contain 45 in gold and sev several ral dollars worth of silver later negotiations were entered into with mr herriman by mr walker and dr bell to take charge of affairs and prospect the field seven holes bored into pay sands during the past six months seven holes have been drilled from one quarter to one and one half miles from the first hole and assays essays have shown gold and silver to a value of per ton and over it is declared these test holes were drilled to a depth of from to feet and the pay streak is said to average from 25 20 to 50 feet in de depth P th it is estimated that approximately 2000 acres contain gold and silver in paying 6 quantities the putting down of more test holes is is in in progress search for a new process assays essays were made in texas new york california colorado detroit chicago b and in the state of michigan as a result of which only one man was found who would consent to give the proposition a considerable amount of his time he was william H marquette of Sagi saginaw michigan to whom credit is b given iven for the method evolved of recover recovering incy b the valuable me metal tal from the black sand ile he found the ol 01 old d way of assaying did not reveal all of the gold it is explained discovering blat that he was working in a cal caum carbonate rock instead of a siliceous rock in which gold and silver is ordinarily found r at the suggestion of walker bell and helli hernman he visited ann arbor to lay his method before the professors of the university of michigan at first they thought he was wron wrong but after going into the matter in 1 I detail professor will willard ard approved mr ettes method j research at case school reveals more metal not arbor work out th the t being b equipped at ann to problem entire mr marquette marquee I 1 1 entirely ly professor willard referred to professor kenneth H donaldson an assayer of pron nence connected with the case school of applied science at cleveland ohio with the results that they have corked I 1 out a method it is stated which will reveal several kinles tun a more precious metal than the old system i 0 core drilling also is done a drilling which has been done to date in the lity is IT of the farman farm has been by the churn method hlen 4 soon to be augmented with core drilling in the vicinity under the direction of F M gray jr of milwaukee rp r ob resenting a firm of widely known drillers drillars dr illers the cores core tn bained by this drilling will b be e boxed and shipped to tc the i 11 assa assayer y er by means of these cores the paying payin quantities of the black sand at each depth can be determined beforehand herriman exudes enthusiasm i mr Herri herriman mans s faith in the operations and his appraisal pra isal of their importance to this region tl are summed up in I 1 the follow following ilIg statement prepared by him 1 without any exah exaggeration ba aeration it may be asserted that no modern discovery has been the cause of so much romance within swithin the memory of man since the gold rush to cali fornia in 49 and the alaskan klondyke of 98 it will be remembered that our forefathers traveled over land in covered wagons to california and endured many inconveniences in order to win a fortune at that time thile they thought the hardships very severe but it was nothing compared to what people suffered in the alaskan jush thousands became rich from the finds in alaska even though the hardships w were ere very great but today a gold 0 discovery has been made very close to one of the states finest highways M 10 it is only a few miles outside of alpena in which city every every facility for comfort may be had there are good hotels and camping campin sites to together ether with amusements of all kinds this without a doubt will ibe be the greatest greate Z sf b gold field ever discovered |
