Show t DRIFTING RECORD AT MINNIE MOORE 31 WET BLANKETED BY COEUR DALENE the wallace idaho miner of the instant takes the wind out of the sails of the hailey news miners account bof of the driffin drifting record made in the minnie moore mine where it was stated the boys had covered a distance of feet in thirty days the miner has the following to say on the subject i this paper always hates to spoil a good story and especially in this case when it deprives a bunch of good hard har rock miners of a distinction which they think they have earned but in the interest of truth and in justice to the brawny hard rock boys of the coeur calenes dA lenes who set the mining pace for the state whether it be in tunnel or shaft raise or the facts must be b given the miner knew that the figures given by the times news miner as the record for the state were not correct but realized that it would b be e useless to dispute them without being pre prepared pared to give the correct fig figures in vesti gation disclosed that the minnie moore record has been excelled at least by three mines in the coeur dalene district and probably at others f record in star crosscut the claim advanced by the hailey paper was brought to the attention of chas H foreman chief engineer of the hecla mining company and the figures he gave show that the minnie moore record for a month has been beaten five times in darivin driving 9 the star crosscut a great tunnel that has been driven al almost mos t two miles from the hecla shaft on the 2000 level on july 1 this year it had been advanced feet the enterprise is one in which the hecla and bunker hill sullivan companies are jointly interested and the actual work is being done by the hecla company mr foreman being the engineer in charge no bonus is offered but the men in the crosscut receive 1 per shift above the regular mine scale the crosscut is feet in the clear and is driven t mostly through re revett vett quartzite which is described as a hard thick bedded rock some rock has been en entered countered ered which resembles burke quartzite which is some what softer than revett the track is placed to grade by f men in the face who also carry up the ditch for drainage oh n fact when it is stated that this crosscut has been ad danced a certain number of feet during the month it means that the crosscut is complete that distance and ready for service so much for conditions under which the star crosscut is being driven details not mentioned in connection with the minnie moore the average round each eight hour shift in the star crosscut is 20 holes as follows 4 back 4 breast 4 cuts 4 second cuts and 4 lifters A shift is composed of three miners one mucking machine operator one helper and one motorman ingersoll leyner machines are used two on a a horizontal bar at one time A few records in may 1923 the crosscut was advanced feet in april 1924 it moved ahead feet in may this year the peak was reached beached feet and in june the advance was feet after giving ivin these figures which may not be a state state record but which effectually deprive the minnie moore boys of the coveted honor mr foreman recalled that a few years ago about 1916 in driving the oom paul crosscut feet was made one month by two shifts the tunnel bein being feet in a quartzite formation high record at stewart mine E G gnaedinger mining engineer when shown the minnie moore figures said that they had been repeatedly beaten in this district he recalled particularly particulars y the stewart crosscut driven under contract by william beaudry superintendent in of the stewart mine mine near kellog this tunnel was feet in the clear and driven in prichard slate mr gnaedinger said that during one month it was advanced feet and for several months it maintained an avera average e around feet this was in 1911 or thereabout there about and was accomplished with the old type of drills being before the water leeners came into use 4 |
