Show sensational gold discovery Is reported in mouth of taylor canyon near ogden by don maguire ogden utah august P 11 it is the unexpected that most usually happens in this world of ours especially if the event be of importance and I 1 am sitting down to report to the mining world a most unexpected incident some three months ago ago b a man who learned mining b wisdom in All mexico exico central america arizona and colorado was compelled by adverse circumstances to spend some days in ogden I 1 am not permitted in this article to give this mans name but it will keep in coming to ogden he was to attend to some professional business with two citizens of this city who for many years have been what we mi might term success successful f ua in the mining game men who have grown to be foxy in the mining industry that is they have reached a point in experience where the term hard boiled applies to them and which means that they are men who can not be easily flim clammed by a man with gold bricks or by other men with patent gold saving methods to work the sands of the snake river or the gravels of southwestern oregon or by men who claim to be able to recover a very valuable white metal from the waters of great salt lake or still other men who some time ago claimed to have discovered a machine method to concentrate and save gold in great quantities from the winds that blow down into southern california from the great mother lode of the sierra nevada range in other words who claimed to save the gold from the auriferous currents blowing from north to south down through the wonderful state of california new discover discovery y is close to ogden let me simply state that the men who seem to be f fortunate ort t ogden are men who are very cautious and who have come to ito possession of what seems to be a new gold field right close to 0 this city I 1 can not as yet give the names of any of the pities parties interested but the facts in the case as I 1 gather them ll 11 e these the first man spoken of here called on the latter wo two who have long been friends and said in the mountain east of ogden known as ogden moun in 1 I 1 llave have down near the base of the mountain in the old pious rocks discovered a wonderful fissure vein it is eight feet beet wide has well defined walls and is rich in gold and silver the berock cock formation is much the same as that which we find finda at pikes s peak in dorado colorado and the vein matter I 1 have dincov ered ti very much resembles the vein matter at cripple creek in that t state discoverer lets his friends in to toli when aa the man who had discovered this vein told his story his aia ogden friends they all left at once to look at the disco dincov V cry r all three e carefully investigated the situation observing the defined d vein ve inthe the rock formation mation in which it occurs its dip course cours they e and apparent rake as regards values in the vein then i carefully went over the surface to learn how far they could trace it and on this feature they were also satisfied they were simply standing on a wonderful gold g 0 id and silver bearing fissure vein hitherto unknown to man as such two locations were at once made and the next step was to find title to the 6 ground round this was found to be in the person of a weber county man mail who seems to have parted from his title to this ground for a moderate consideration inasmuch as the ground thus disposed of to the purchasers covers sufficient surface to constitute several full mining claims all of which have ven een located staked and recorded three days later the work of sinking on this newly discovered bonanza claim was started underbrush was cleared away from the spot where work was to be started the road up from the mouth of taylors canyon was put into repair lumber and mine timbers were hauled to the point where work was to begin a huge government house tent was put into place and the work of opening up what seems to be a gold mine was commenced all this has happened since about the middle of june on the ath instant by permission of the owners of the property the writer of this article visited the discovery and here is the way he went and here is what he found how to reach the claims at twenty fifth street ogden oden O tt den utah I 1 boarded a street car running eastward after riding ten blocks I 1 got off and walked about one mile into the mouth of taylors canyon that opens to the westward from ogden mountain there is a wagon 6 road for some little distance up taylor s canyon about a half mile from the mouth of the canyon this road turns off at a sharp angle along the mountain side in its course to where there is a summer resort in waterfall canyon known as the morlan resort at a point about a quarter of a mile before reaching the angle or turn in this mountain road there is a big bi ig b spring f lowing flowing from a slate shale formation this spring is is owned by the union depot company of ogden it has a large f low flow of pure water and is piped to a large reservoir about a mile to the westward and from there to the depot buildings and grounds in ogden about half way between this spring and where the wagon road turns to go up the south side of the canyon along the mountain side I 1 found the gold discovery it is on the south side of the canyon and the work started begins at a point about fifty feet above the canyon bed work done and vein characteristics work was started on the outcrop of the vein vein there I 1 found folind the mouth of a square shaft well timbered and the initial undertaking carried on in a workmanlike workman like manner for about ten feet f act from f roni the surface as the vein filling filli ng material matena I 1 was broken timbering was done and when the vein stood solid work was carried on down in the vein without timber timbering imn 6 I 1 did not measure the shaft T should say it had attained a depth of thirty or thirty two feet and with twenty feet of it in good clean ore the vein fillin filling is most peculiar and I 1 must admit that it closely resembles in appearance the ores found at cripple creek colorado the vein filling is made up of quartz feld spar and in places small masses of purple flou spar throughout the vein filling there are fractures and bugs filled with what seems to the casual observer who has been in tel tellurium murium bea bearing ring mines what looks like and tellurium and the metallic contents of the vein seem to improve as the work continues downward sensational values in ore claimed now the reader of this article will probably remark the description and appearance appe arnce of this vein reads all very fine but what about the values in gold silver lead or copper I 1 will reply at once by stating that there does not seem to be any lead or copper the values reported are in gold and silver in relative proportions of about ten parts of silver to ninety parts of gold and the values in 6 gold old are from one half ounce to gozs per ton or plainer still from 10 to 2600 per par ton and two assays essays are reported as running up to per ton in gold and ounces in silver Theseas these essays assays says certainly read well and I 1 am confident that the fissure vein vein is is going down to a ta great depth the rock formation in which the vein vein or lode occurs 1 is is igneous in in origin and there is little doubt but what other veins will be found between the mouth of ogden anyon canyon on the north and weber on the south as the older rock formations constitute the mountain base for that distance I 1 am not prepared to state what such veins may carry I 1 can not state personally as to the contents of the vein in this original discovery cov ry I 1 only know what I 1 have been told by good reputable men and I 1 let it go at that this is the first public mention of this discovery everything thin 11 has been kept very quiet two distinct and separate parties have a agreed reed on silence and mutual acquisition and they have attempted to secure everything in sight but if this proves to be a real discovery inside of ninety days all of ogden mountain will have been located as is usual in such cases this report although covering some space is necessarily brief but if developments justify it I 1 will tell your readers more about it in the next issue |
