Show bully boy mines corporation now operating big mines at marysvale Marys vale utah by A 0 gates inquiry as to persistent reports rather sensational as regards Z ore bodies and values in the mines about marysvale Marys vale utah resulted in a come and see for yourself reply the writer was therefore sent by the mining review to the B bully ully boy mine aline property to obtain such facts as might be of interest to its readers at the property every reasonable facility for information was provided the activity and apparent confidence in the future gave one the impression that here was a mine A 3 4 z atom r 7 4 X view of bully boy camp and surroundings which could hardly help becoming b one of big producers in a very short visit one can not digest and check every statement and when one finds a beautiful country in which to place a mine and water power sufficient for big production the use those who know me best wll will probably intimate unkind things to my face according to general manager michael barnett there are about two hundred and fifty thousand tons of low grade ore blocked out in the bully boy alone my impression is that this ore will run from 15 to 30 per fsr ton after the high grade and also certain more or less occasional streaks streak s of country rock are sor sorted ted out location of the mines the property of the bully boy mines corporation is located in the tushar range which contains with the exception of the uintah mountains the highest mountain peaks in utah mt belknap being feet high the mining district is 1 is s f y two of 0 hoy boy inners known as the ohio and a mile or so away is mt baldy district both in ill piute diute county A wagon road seven and one half miles long connects the property with the town of marysvale Marys vale the southern terminus of a branch of the denver and rio grande western railway miles south of salt lake A straight ene from beaver bea ver utah on the other side of the range to marysvale Marys vale would nearly pass through the property to the north nort hand and a little west abour 8 miles lies kimberly also oy biver er the range at which the annie laurie mine mine is located the deer trail mine an active producer of very high grade gold silver lead ores lies about 21 miles southeast and is working ore bodies which presumably extend under tinder the bully boy early history of bully boy the history of the mine goes back into the sixties when it was operated by george hearst the husband of phoebe and the father of william randolph at that time the work was by shafts about 1000 feet above the present no 1 tunnel level high grade gold and silver ores being hauled by ox teams to thistle more than 1 niles miles to the north following this the property was worked in a desultory manner statements of the natives together with the evidence in and other openings indicate the shipment of high grade ores in much greater quantities than is shown in the report of the TY IT S geological survey the ore deposits of utah 1920 the bully boy mine was acquired by philadelphia capitalists about 1908 and a milling plant containing stamps and concentrators centra tors was built at the mouth of bullion canyon four miles from the mine in 1912 the mill was moved to a location close to the mine and equipment for cyaniding cyan iding added the mill burned down in 1914 and the mines were idle up un to the present year with the exception of some work done ba b leasers leaders lea sers the present company was organized november under the laws of th the state eState of delaware and started work in march 1922 the holdings of the company consist of the bully boy inck cv X d T IN L na swon snobia mine acquired under lease and bond the deseret mine the workings of which are six hundred feet east of the bully boy and the dalton property higher up on the hill both of the latter being acquired by purchase and additional locations which round out and protect the original system which run almost parallel in strike but dip in an opposite direction to the bully boy and deseret bodies in the present crosscutting cross cutting for development development of the east vein system numerous stringers are found running from two inches in width up there are also many cross veins in t this his fast east vein system including the stringers and cross fissures the values are mostly silver and lead a considerable amount apparently being in sulphide form in the bully boy and deseret the ore bodies are quite varied in character both sulphide and carbonates as well as oxides being present while copper is occasionally found the bodies worked by previous operators contain gold and silver apparently in the form of sulphides sulp hides which has accounted for low extraction in the cyanide plant As tell urides are known to exist in the property it is probable that some of the zold sold and silver is combined with it in the sides of the bully boy vein galena carrying high silver values lead carbonates and some zinc are found all carrying silver values iron oxide and manganese oxides are found in streaks and other forms throughout the body in this particular mine the manganese carries little value but is an indication of other ore values the gangue across the body is largely quartz and decomposed porphyry the bully boy ore body is exposed by a strong outcropping cropPing out croppi which extends up tip the hill to an elevation of 1500 feet above the end of the present no 1 tunnel and then on up to an elevation of about 2500 feet with n the limits of the Droner fv the lenell of the no 1 tunnel is something over 2000 feet and it is notice able that the hillside here is particularly steep A considerable amount of ore high in silver and gold was taken out by the hearst interest in the early days in the territory beewen points about feet and SW feet above no I 1 tunnel and on oil a width from 4 feet to 8 feet wide this ground now being more or less caved and inaccessible the lead silver ores on one or both sides being untouched the assumpta on is that the lead silver bodies X A 14 baily boy outcrop robbers roost workings about feet hoove no t tunnel found in no I 1 tunnel will naturally be found at this point the e bodies above no 1 tunnel have been opened by raises and sub levels up tip to these former workings and dinzes have been sunk from no I 1 tunnel about ft deep about 1000 ft from the portal ai and ld one about 80 ft deep about 1800 ft from the portal all these workings are in ore it is easy to presume that the ore body will extend to the limits of the property and to the deer trail limestone which is expected to be found between feet and 1500 feet below the tunnel level the deseret ore body some feet east of the bully boy is outlined by an outcropping cropping out similar to the bully boy and is opened up by a tunnel driven from off the body reaching it at feet and extending to about feet this body is stated to contain values of 20 to 30 per ton for a width of 3 to 6 feet mostly carbonates the values being in silver lead copper and gold in in a quartz gangue little exploration has been made of the E east ast vein system in which the values are in silver and lead said to run above 60 per ton but they are now being 6 developed by crosscuts cross cuts from no 1 tunnel and the harris tunnel on one of the east veins just started for tapping high grade ore bodies exposed in upper tipper workings and to assist in ventilation what is known I 1 as the dewitt strike is an old leasers leaders lea sers workings from which a considerable quantity of high grade ore was taken out some years ago above this new tunnel interesting ore characteristics some interesting things th in the relation between the silver wl irl lead values have been found in the bully boy body the average silver runs about 2 oz per 1 per cent lead the flaky galena 3 to 4 oz per 1 per cent lead fine grain galena alena 1 to 2 oz per I 1 per cent lead carbonates about 6 oz per I 1 per cent lead in the east vein system 4 to 5 oz siver per 1 per cent lead of minor interest are a number of rarer metals that are found with these ores the of lead has just been recognized along the bull bully y boy vein and in such quantities that it was thought worth while to make a concentrate in the pilot mill in one short run it Is s probable however in actual operations that no attempt will be made to separate this as the relative quantity is is not great this does not have the rich orange color of most specimens but is more more of a grey or pearl color tellurium and se selenium eleni urn are known to be associated with these ores the ore deposits of utah 1920 the supposition bein being that some of the high grade silver stringers carry sylvan e rn aix lan ai I 1 IF tj 4 W demaret tunnel und dumpe ite or some other telluride of silver in intimate mixture with the quartz closely associated with this high grade ore the selenium occurs no assays essays or analyses are available A considerable amount of bismuth is found in the silver I 1 lead leaca copper gold ores of carbonate nature in a quartz gangue fa at the deseret milling of the ores the pilot mill in which jhc thc ath metallurgical treatment of these ores is being worked out on a commercial basis is the old dalton mill bu built 1 ailt about 30 years ago and shut down for most of the time following the machinery appears to be in exceptionally good condition and now is being augmented by additional equipment to 1 increase the capacity from the present 25 tons to to 1 25 tons per 24 hours at present it is a straight Z gravity concentration M mill ill equipped with blake crusher rolls huntington mill two wilfley tables and now fagergren flotation machines are being installed the other new equipment will include a larger blake crusher crush cr larger rolls a 4 ft by 5 ft ball mill and 8 wilfley tables milling results from the pilot mill without flotation give an extraction of about 60 per cent on average ore from the bully boy body running 16 oz silver 11 per cent lead and small arn amounts of copper gold and zinc with a ratio of concentration between 18 and laboratory te tests ats indicate that when the flotation unitt units are installed which are now on the ground and rapidly being erected an extraction of 90 per cent may be expected the concentrates from froin the present gravity pilot mill run in the ak A J W J ivr 4 n pilot mill showing new ne construction neighborhood of per ton and this value will be increased considerably by flotation A milling plant of 1000 tons daily capacity is under consideration era tion the details of which are tentative and will depend upon experience in milling the ores in the plant now being completed equipment mining is done with ingersoll rand jack hammers and waugh sto pers in the blacksmith shop a waugh tool sharpener pener and a sullivan oil furnace are used for drill
