Show Cl gigantic gantic coal disclosures in utah NV william illiam bailey secretary of the utah state board of equalization and prof william peterson geologist for the th e state board are authority for the statement that a new virgin coal field embracing a hundred square miles and having in sight and measurable more than a billion tons has been discovered in the southern part of the state the officials mentioned only recently fe returned turned from a trip of inspection into and through the southern counties and the news concerning the new coal deposits was released upon their return part of their trip included huntington canyon in emery county where they directed the state surveying parties in their work of measuring the monster banks of coal which from the first preliminary survey are estimated to contain at lease one billion two hundred million tons of coal already in sight with the probability that there is double that amount further underground there are square miles of solid coal acres more than tons per acre the new survey is proceeding as fast as possible and shows that the coal is easily accessible for a railroad which would have to be only about seven miles to strike the beginning of the coal seams the new find seems to lie mainly in two veins oue one is seven feet wide and the other is twelve feet wide the veins extend for miles on both sides of the canyon quality of the best the quality of the coal is apparently of the best being a high grade bituminous coal of about the same kind that has fiade utah coal famous for producing steam and which is now being demanded in an ever increasing territory the land on which this bed of coal is located is some private and some state but mostly private holdings it appears to be located so that it can be dug with little expense and as the nearest railroad station is at mohrland only seven miles away with no engineering difficulties lying between it is quite probable that a railroad could be built into the region at a small expense i the utah railroad runs through mohrland deposits known for years rumors of coal have been brought in from this region for the past few years and the state officials knew that it was there vohen hen they left a fortnight ago to go through the field but they did not know the e extent nor the magnitude of the fields fielda A survey has been quietly working in hunt naton canyon for some time and it will te take the remainder of this year to cross croos section with surveying lines the giant coal oe de posit but it is being done and it took the e present trip of mr bailey and prof peterson eterson to uncover the possibilities of the I 1 locality and it seems from their description of the coal find that utah is destined to the world with coal for many generations erat ions to come |
