Show fallon well studding in day road work shows oil sands B BY Y A J MOORE fallon nevada sept 10 for months the rebuilding of the road between salt wells and sand springs has been under way by the U S and state governments this is a strip of road beginning about fifteen miles southeast of fallon it develops that in the excavating for material to build the road a peculiar quality of sand was uncovered the road builders considered it an excellent material and used it quite freely along with other material oil men who have examined it pronounce it none other than an oil sand it was cut into within a few feet of the surface and had not been gone through when the contract was recently finished this is significant inasmuch as geologists have always considered this section of the field as a deep well section E P osgood in a report for an oil company in this section said that wells here might be opened that would rival those of mexico but that oil might be found at lesser depth than at the foot he advised to drill true the oil sand does not carry much oil but it shows that oil and oil sands are where you find them studding in day at big 4 between the hours of one and two on oil september ath the road to the oil fields was lined with automobile parties all on the way to witness the studding spud ding in at the big pour four lease on the R H moore ranch As it is only about one and a halt half miles from town over smooth road the big standard rig on oil this ground promises to be one of the sights of fallon it was planned some weeks ago to have started the drill out after R H moore became financially interested in the big four company but he requested that drilling operations be suspended until 16 inch stovepipe stove pipe casing could be secured while everything bt at the time was ready to go ahead with twelve and a half inch screw casing it was considered advisable to follow mr moores advice california was hunted over to find the pipe trips being made to many of the oil fields by A 13 nichols and ben P nichols the casing finally secured was rushed to fallon by express there was no speechmaking speech making just busy hustle on the part of driller hart and his crews the nichols boys were busy explaining Pla ining to the visitors the various tools ana d parts of a drilling rig and their uses at p m steam was turned on and everything everything hooked up and the drill began its 8 journey urney to the oil sands geologists state that lt oil strata should be cut at bess than an feet beet again at feet and several between that and 1200 feet where an oil sand carrying oil in commercial quantities should be cut the rig has a capacity of to feet or even deeper if needs be another standard rig coming the astra development company will be the next to bring in a standard rig one was shaped from los angeles on september fth by the eddy engineering works A novelty will be presented in the way of furnishing power by a 45 h p tractor during drilling hours it will be used to run the drill and when that is idle the necessary hauling will be done by it the moving rig spirit in the astra development company is dr dellarowe a noted pharmacist of los angeles he has a large following in that city and has financed the company without depending upon stock sales to the public he was one of the first from southern california to become interested in the fallon fallen field and after a personal inspection used his money and influence to help develop it driller gregory has returned from his california trip and the lumber for the derrick for the churchill county rig being on the ground he will begin the erection of the same at once in this well several seepages see pages have been cut and the casing landed at feet fishing tools for everybody the many delays from want of proper tools has aroused the various companies to the importance of having such on hand and in the field As many companies have reached considerable depth the loss of a bit as at the fallon fallen pioneer recently has awakened them to the seriousness of such a mishap A full set of fishing tools of sufficient variety to provide against all of the many conditions of a lost bit costs over this is a heavy burden on any one company mr vetter secretary of the fallon pioneer has a plan on foot whereby all the active companies may join in the expense of securing a full set and each bear a proportionate share of cost with such a set in the field for operative cooperative co use when needed serious delays may be avoided in case of a fishing job at any well lahontan ready to drill the machinery for the new standard rig of the Labon lahontan tan oil syndicate is now all on the ground and the derrick nearing completion A good water flow has been developed in the water well nearby and that expense will be eliminated in drilling the new well water has ever been a heavy item of expense to all new wells in the fallon field in some instances this item has reached as high as 20 a day the erection of the der rick is under direction of an expert builder from california the drilling will be in charge of fred J reid who was formerly associated socia ted with the union standard and other large companies he is credited with having drilled over twenty wells he is quite familiar with various formations and pronounces that of the fallon fallen district as one of the most favorable for big wells that he has ever seen the lahontan oil syndicate was among the very first to attract the attention of the public and tol to begin drilling the first well had to be abandoned this was due to an accident that sometimes happens under the most experienced of managements however there has been a change of management the new officers now include A H howe president james A holman vice president james C robertson secretary treasurer directors john F kuntz W S lunsford C W kinney and chas ferrel news concerning field operations frank hobbs secretary and treasurer of the silver state consolidated is on a business trip to reno and san francisco to be gone about ten days the casing at the silver state consolidated is landed at a depth feet drilling will be resumed shortly the fallon fallen oil and gas company is making very slow progress in an exceedingly hard formation at 1000 feet J P brandley president of the weaver oil company has ordered work to be resumed at that property and he is planning to begin active operations for the newly organized plumas oil company on property just south of the weaver as soon as supplies can be secured H J mcdonald who is interested in the lahontan oil syndicate and the nevada sand springs oil company is a visitor in fallon fallen accompanied by mr odon of california mr oden is looking the field over for investment in oil lands he is credited with being an a active oil operator and if he can secure such land as he wants will incorporate a company and send in a standard rig at once J rr murtaugh of rainier oil company has gone to san francisco while there he expects to con comm a deal he has had on for some weeks whereby a rig will be put on the ranier ground shortly george F settle vice president and fiscal agent of the reservation oil company reports that the finances of that company are nearing a point where a drill may be ordered the company holds a lease on part of the indian reservation also a large acrea acreage ge of located land the pioneer oil company has resumed drilling and is now in a much more favorable formation than a at t any time heretofore the council oil company under direction of geo S is another company that will soon be in the market for machinery |
