Show beneficial RESULTS OF MINING there are millions of people in this coun try who have but little knowledge of the vast importance of the mining industry as affecting other lines of business and occupation and who have a vague idea that only the mining operator is benefited by the prodoc tion of the precious and baser metals and they even look upon the industry as being an occupation in which there are more chances to lose than there is to win and have not the slightest conception of the immediate and beneficial relations that mining bears to other lines of industry for instance the utah copper company of bingham utah is the largest copper producer in the state it has by far the largest payroll of any mining or other cor Po ration in ill this intermountain region and in ill its mines mills shops and railroads gives employment to a force of men if all of its earnings went solely to stockholders I 1 they would be many times millionaires by this time during its brief existence it has paid nearly eighty millions in dividends sut but during this period it has paid for supplies machinery labor equipment land etc and at its present rate ot of production including transportation expenses has an average payroll of per month and this vast amount is distributed through various channels until every line lille of industry of endeavor is reached and beneficially cefic bally affected the farmer gets his i share and so does the manufacturer the employed is able to meet his obligations with jf the merchant and every line of business is reached besides the farmer the merchant the doctor actor the grocer and the laboring man other industries are benefited by the earnings of the company in its operations the company uses in the neighborhood of tons of coal daily thus giving profitable employment to the coal miner and makes business for the coal producer As its product goes to the smelters shelters sm elters other men are directly benefited while its consumption of powder and dynamite gives employment to hundreds of others the amount paid by the company for labor in 1917 amounts to twice as much as the total tax collected by salt lake county in the year 1914 and its assessment for national state and county taxes for 1917 equalled equal led the total taxes collected in the state of utah for the year 1914 in utah there are many mining companies whose records run along similar lines lilies companies who are making heroic and patriotic eff efforts orts to help uncle sam in its war with the hated hun and whose contributions to the liberty loan and other war measures have made it possible to make up the allotment for the third loan the beneficial results of mining are many and far reaching and it is high time that the people of the united states come to a better understanding of what the industry means to them and to the nation |
