Show tybo section n of nevada BY JAMIS JAMES F OBRIEN tybo nevada april 8 to inherit more than a half million dollars above ground and in plain sight before it has mined a single pound of ore on its own hook from a particular mine is something that rarely falls to the lot of a corporation or an aa individual but that is exactly what happened when the louisiana consolidated alining Iiii ing company acquired the famous old tybo mine fifty five miles northeast of tonopah To to bo be sure the half million is not in stamped coin coill of the realm but uie the statement that the ore dump at the main shaft and the big slag pile at the old smelter site will net that amount to the company is based on scientific tests and assays essays made by men of standing and integrity the present high prices of lead silver and zinc which prices will doubtless prevail for some years are of course an important factor the ore dump at the main shaft consists almost entirely of material that was taken out in running a drift on the vein at the foot level by former operators of the mine after they had picked out the very best ore and shipped it to the smelter judging from the value in the ore that was left the ere cre which was shipped must have been worth several hundred dollars per ton even at the low metal prices then prevailing vai ling assays essays show that the ore now being bein sacked will run and better to the ton toil and tho the proportion of the dump that thai will sort to this high n grado grade is a t very respectable one A single man sacked eight tons of this shipping ore in a few days and lie put in but a portion on of his time thile at this i work it being the intention of the company to let nothing interfere with getting the plant in shape for extensive underground work assays essays taken from grab samples of the finer dirt from all over tile the dump dulny shows that it will run per ton from the foregoing figures it will readily be seen that the estimate of general manager heizer that the whole tons on this dump will average at least 50 is conservative serva tive with the facts in mind that this ore was taken out in running the drift on the I 1 lowest ai V level of the mine that the best of the product was sorted and shipped to the smelter and that the yein vein at this point is stronger and richer than ever and gives es evidence that it will persist in depth for hundreds of feet more the potentialities of the tybo mine may inay tie be better appreciated and the good fortune or rather the good business sense of the louisiana consolidated mining company in acquiring it be comes apparent at tile the site of the old smelter which was operated during the there is a slag pile of about tons in the old days smelling smelting sm sili elting methods were crude and much of the values were not recoverable but were carried away in the slag modern methods will recover these values and it is estimated that there will oje be at least net profit to the company in retreating this slag it is probable though that this will not be done until the company has its own owl smelter and ana railroad in order that the maximum results may be secured large amount of work being done the visitor to tybo at this time cannot fail to be impressed with the great amount of work that has been accomplished iby by the force under general manager heizer and superintendent clarence woods the unlooked unlocked for delays which in enterprises of this magnitude may be always looked for fer to use an have occurred but splendid progress has nevertheless been made the freight wagon with the heavier parts of the diesel engine broke down about fifteen miles from camp and this will hold back the watering unwavering un and development of the mine for perhaps two weeks another point which impresses itself upon the visitor is the flexibility of the power plant arrangement when the transmission line of the nevada california power company is extended from belmont to tybo everything will be driven by electric motors but at such times as there may be a failure of power from this source and such failure has occurred often enough elou 1 I ii to cause serious loss to some tonopah companies the tybo mine will continue operations operation uninterruptedly with power from its own auxiliary plants mine equipment As a first auxiliary there is a horse power diesel engine driving a 9 and belted compressor and a 75 kilowatt electric ele ciric generator which will furnish current for electric station and sinking pumps As a second auxiliary there are three i 80 horse power boilers a 9 and two stage steam driven compressor a duplex steam driven station pump and two no 9 cameron sinking pumps all pumps are arranged to be driven by either p compressed air or steam hoisting will be done with a 75 horse f power double drum electric hoist with an reversible steam hoist as an auxiliary ft to be driven by an independent 60 horse power boiler the electric lighting plant for the mine and camp will be entirely independent and will consist of a 10 kilowatt generator direct connected with gasoline engine at the bunker or no 2 shaft a 25 horse 10 power gasoline hoist will operate until the electric transmission line is extended from belmont at which time an electric hoist will be installed other mines will operate it is believed that before long many other mines in this vicinity will be operated largely as a result of a conviction that the louisiana company will soon carry to a successful conclusion its plans for the new railroad and smelter several days ago john H miller of lucky boy and W lester mangum of salt lake city passed through tybo on their way to make an examination of the extension of the moray mine the latter was a wonderful producer of rich ore in the old days and it is claimed that there are millions still left in it it i is not known if mangum and miller have taken over the property they examined but the mere fact that they and others of their standing are looking this way shows that the potentialities of this section are at last being realized trucks for tybo two more duplex auto trucks with four trailers for the same consigned to the louisiana consolidated i mining company arrived in reno yesterday and will at once be driven to tonopah and put into service hauling I 1 fuel oil and supplies to the com banys tybo mine and back hauling with high grade ore from that famous old producer the first duplex truck which has lb been een in commission for some weeks is giving splendid satisfaction and has cut the hauling costs to a point that was not deemed possible the truck itself carries three and one half tons and the same weight is carried on the trailer attached the distance from tonopah to the tybo mine is sixty eight Z miles over the road traveled and the trip is made in a little over eight hours counting all stops there has been scarcely a difference of half an hour in the schedule time from the first day to foster development while allowing nothing to interfere with the operation of the tybo mine it is the intention of the louisiana consolidated company to foster in every way possible the development of that section of the state through which its railroad will be built there are several old mines with good production records as well as numerous promising prospects which will doubtless produce steadily with further development adjacent to the proposed route of the new nev road the smelter which the louisiana company will also erect will treat the ores from these properties at a reasonable rate and the railroad will furnish cheap transportation meantime for such mines por tation in the and mark marketing etin at once as are opened up the ores is desired before the railroad and smelter is completed the louisiana com pany will help to the extent of making a low freight rate on their auto trucks As a further aid in the development of the mines agricultural and stock interests of this section the company is putting in a well stocked general merchandise store at tybo which will carry practically everything that is needed by the miner and rancher this will save many of them much time and money and is fully appreciated in the old days when tybo had a population of the company store did a business of more than monthly and a duplication of this record is expected before many months building operations the old store building the guest house which also contained the company office as well as perhaps ten other smaller houses and buildings were found in a fair state of repair when the louisiana company started work in march these are being painted and papered and put in good shape generally and a number of portable houses will be brought in to house the employed emp loyes A private office and living quarters adjoining the store have been fixed up for superintendent clarence woods and he moved in during the week A new hotel together with a garage will ibe be built at once to take care of the transients who are coming to tybo in increasing numbers since the news of the companas comp anys operations have been given to the world the building to house the main power plant sixty four iby by thirty six feet in size has been completed as well as smaller buildings for auxiliary aux plants and a blacksmith 0 s shop hop |
