Show boss mill complete success goodsprings GOOD SPRINGS NEV GAZETTE in a recent interview with 0 J fisk one of the directors of the boss gold mining company and former general manager the gazette representative gained some first land hand information concerning the construe tion and operation of the new boss mill a cut of which appears above the gist of the interview is as follows referring to our conversation regarding the boss mill I 1 visited very recently the plant erected by the palau metal company of los angeles the plant was built under the personal supervision of mr C A who is the president and general manager of the above named company as well as the manager of the pacific platinum works mr has had a wide experience peri ence with the plat lurn group and is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the pacific coast in that particular re 1 Z an new plant of the palau metal company first of its kind in the world the site is on a siding of the salt lake route at the ninth street crossing on the banks of the los angeles river the location is admirably adapted to its use tile the ground being enough lower than the track to allow the dumping of ore direct from the cars into the ore bins reducing tile the cost of the unloading to a minimum the mill occupies a ground space of 40 by feet exclusive of of office flee buildings laboratory and storage bul buildings laings the power is derived from five fairbanks morse volt motors producing in all something over eighty horsepower the largest a forty horsepower driving tile the main mill while the smaller ones operate the various units tile the ore is dumped direct from the cars into a ton storage bin from which it is drawn by a specially designed feeder to a four by five herman pebble mill the mill was as manufactured in los angeles and is the invention of mr john herman a los angeles inventor the pebbles used for the grinding are secured from a deposit near oceanside california the feeder was originated by mr and was also built in los angeles the ore is crushed to mesh before being discharged to a classifier constructed from a design furnished by mr to handle this particular class of ore any amy particles too large for treatment are returned to the mill for re grinding the slimes are then picked up by a frenier sand pump and elevated twenty four feet to the agitation leaching tanks of which there are fourteen each of six tons capacity per twenty four hours the pulp is treated in all for about fourteen hours constant agitation being maintained during the treatment this agitation is produced by heavy oak paddles or propel propellers lors belt driven and so hinged on ball bearings that the friction is reduced to the minimum after the treatment the clutch is thrown out and the agitators come to rest allowing the pulp to settle the solutions containing the values are then drawn off to tile the precipitating tanks where the precious metals are precipitated out and the solution containing the copper is passed on to the iron boxes where the copper is removed the principal chemical used in the process is sulphuric acid for which a lead lined storage tank of a capacity of ten tons is provided the various metals are separated at the mill a ready sale for the copper being found in los angeles the gold platinum and palladium are turned out as a manufactured product by the pacific platinum works the palau metal company has an up to date office at the plant as well office and laboratory as a modern assay tile the mill is now running twenty four hours a day and gives every promise of being a complete success for the benefit of the it might be well to explain that the palau metal kompany has perfected a process of manufacturing fac turing a substance called palau from the gold and palladium this palau as it is called has been subjected to severe tests by the government as well as by individuals and has been found to do practically the same work as platinum at of course a much lower cost the great scarcity of platinum which is such a necessity in laboratory work renders this new invention of great importance the boss gold cold mining company has just paid the regular quarterly 2 cent dividend and the future of the wonder mine aline has never at any time looked brighter than at present with a successfully operating plant which saves over 90 per cent of the values to treat its precious ores and a practically unlimited tonnage of those ores in sight it is not strange that the boss mine is attract attracting attraction in the attention of the civilized world |
