Show 0 appreciation Z salt lake city utah A march 21 1917 mr r will C higgins editor salt lake mini ing review my Y dear sir As a subscriber and constant reader of 0 our valued paper permit me to express y appreciation at the courage you dismayed in the two editorials which appeared a the review of march 15 1917 on page 0 entitled legislatures and mining and efto to enlighten the people I 1 wish that governor bamberger and every member of the le recent legislature could have an all cullity hy to see these articles as well as to I 1 ee this letter which I 1 trust you will reproduce li in an early edition of your paper to a mining man the action of tile the governor of this state and the members of tile the legislature legislature is disheartening the governor said on his inauguration day among other things that the coming year was filled with rosy prospects for utah etc where in the name of heaven are these rosy prospects coming from if not from the continued prosperity of the mining industry utah needs all the outside capital it can get utah is not a growing state compared to others as the recent city directory which covers the entire county of salt lake showed that this county only gained from people to people in one year a gain of 2900 people at this rate the entire state only increased people and it is extremely doubtful if the entire state gained in the proportion that salt lake county gained any old timer can tell of the good old days some years ago when the cow county citizens received 10 cents a dozen for eggs 20 cents for a fat chicken and their daughters did domestic servants duties tor for 2 a week what changed all of this the mining industry of course how much business would there be in salt lake city if the utah copper mine the silver king and the other leading mines of this state were by some magic moved to california there would be just about as much business as some flag station like hogup hogop on the western pacific railway it is only necessary to go back to august 1914 when all of the mines in this state were down to a 50 per cent basis or less and every line of business in this city from a bank to a saloon felt the results of this curtailment truly we are a peculiar people I 1 would move that our present governor have signs erected at the entrances to the state keep out you and your money are not wanted in this state yours sincerely subscriber |
