Show MEETING OF ENGINEERS new york feb 19 more than mining engineers froni from practically every section of the country met here today for the one hundred and fourteenths convention of the american institute of 11 mining ining engineers sessions will continue throughout four days and subjects of importance to the american mining world are on the program for discussion the indebtedness of the united states to brazil for its supply of manganese ores since the outbreak of the european war was pointed out in the course of the proceedings ce liy by dr joseph T jr and dr benjamin le roy miller it was stated that manganese is one of the few industrially important metals that are not produced in the united states in quantity commensurate with the needs and that there is now being imported about tons annually in a years time brazils share of the manganese importation jumped from two fifths to nine tenths of the total prior to the war india and russia furnished the greater part of the american supply morning sessions were on the general subject of geology and special features were a paper on the recent geologic developments on the iron range minnesota by J p wolff and papers on grain growth phenomena in metals by zay jeffries and dr henry henryta Tr howe discussions of subjects relating to petroleum gas milling and smelting smelling sm elting were brought out in two afternoon sessions among the special subjects were evidence of the Okla oklahoma lionia oil fields on the theory by dorsey hager and the Wagne magnetic tic concentration of low grade iron ores by is norton and is le fevre in the latter paper it was stated that the mining chance of striking it rich has been eliminated by the manufacturing certainty of handling large quantities of material as proven by porphyry copper mines of the west |
