Show the snake creek tunnel one ne of the most important enterprises jiow underway in the state of utah is the driving of the snake creek tunnel for it will ivill not only on a large area of mineral ground in its course but it will also provide a transportation avenue for the movement of ores from a region that has been heretofore almost inaccessible and should in any way prove futile which is beyond the realm of possibility however as the tunnel upon completion will develop known ore bodies of incalculable value and those ore measures will be cut at great depth and the tunnel will present a convenient and economical outlet in the marketing of the same far enough north to cut the C Crese rese cent fissure of the silver king coalition mining company this tunnel which is 81 feet in width in the clear 6 feet 6 inches in height above the rail with a water channel 4 feet deep and 4 feet in width has a grade of 3 inches per feet the course of the tunnel is northwesterly while the fissuring of the district is southwesterly the first feet of the tunnel follows an absolutely straight line from the point it will swing northwesterly to the boundary line of the properties already mentioned this objective point should be reached within a period of about four months so far but little timbering has been required ca se ILL S FT ti n ITI 0 N MINES CO 0 JV aty JR M 0 jak riz DALY DOLLARS also make inake it possible to mine at great depth the southwesterly portion of the park city section as well as the heart of alta which can be reached by a two mile drive from a point in the main tunnel as the low altitude of the big bore will enable lt it to attain great depth under the deepest workings of the mines in big and little cottonwood districts in addition this tunnel is important because of the water flow it is developing this is now being utilized in developing electric power which means a constant source of revenue to the snake creek mining tunnel company and the sale le of the water for irrigating and municipal consumption should spell regular divi ads if the main object of the proposition the snake creek mining tunnel company owns acres of patented mineral land besides acres at the portal of its tunnel which is located five miles west of midway the tunnel was started in snake creek canyon near the mouth of wolverine canyon at an altitude of feet the tunnel was started in may 1910 and is now in a distance of feet it will be feet in length when it reaches the boundary line of the daly judge company and the snake creek mining tunnel company when this line is reached the tunnel will be continued continue cutting the main fissure system of the daly judge property along the line of segregation between the daly judge and the tannei tunnel company and in the running of the tunnel about a 5 per cent in all and all heavy ground has been permanently taken care of such for instance as the feet which has been protected by a cement lining the average of the tunnel flow for september was over gallons per minute the concrete lining to properly appreciate the character of work represented in the driving of the snake creek tunnel and the expense to which the company has been to make this a transportation outlet of tile the highest class and 0 greatest permanency it will be of interest to our readers to give a description of the special design of concrete lining which was placed ed in the tunnel at a point where ground conditions demanded heroic treatment the concrete lining which was designed by 0 N friendly engineer for the tunnel company consists of an ail egg shaped structure heavily reinforced with steel and off offers ers a novel form of tunnel design inasmuch as the steel was so placed so as to bring all tensile stresses to bear on it while the concrete takes up the compressive stresses the accompanying cut shows the form of construction in this form a maximum strength is obtained for the amount of materials used reference to the drawing will show that there is no waste face but that all space is utilized to the greatest advantage the proof of the fitness of this construction st is shown by the fact that notwithstanding the extreme length and heavy nature of the ground which caused the heaviest timbers to fail within twenty f four our hours after being placed in position the lining today after being in place for over four years remains in perfect condition this splendid piece of work has been highly spoken of in engineering circles genera generally ily tunnel equipment the equipment at the mouth of tile the tunnel consists of an electric power plant and boarding and bunk houses sufficient to care for a force of sixty men the machinery equipment consists of one no 5 root blower for ventilating purposes this is driven by a 35 horsepower general electric motor there are two electrically driven air compressors pres sors one of which is a sullivan with a capacity of feet of free air per minute and the other is a bury having a capacity of feet of free air tor for the same period these are in separate units and are driven by two general electric motors one of of horsepower the and the other with a leyner equipped blacksmith shop is ingersoll drill sharpener double track for designed the tunnel is has been lai laid d at the present although only one means of a 16 by time it is ventilated d 0 47 Y A M x denver rock drill company stuart G taylor is tunnel superintendent the driving of tile the tunnel is being done by J A mcilwee of denver and salt lake tunnel contractor below the tunnel portal the tunnel company has constructed up to date boarding and bunk houses which are modern in every respect being fitted up with hot and cold water facilities shower baths electric lights and telephone at the tunnel portal a as previously stated the company owns acres of land which will afford ample room for mill buildings smelter sites the build ing of dwellings for employees and for the construction of reservoirs the water flow permanent arrangements have been made with the utah power light corn cona pany for the use of the tunnel flow for the 9 generation ene ration of electricity whereby the power company supplies the tunnel company with electric current at a most satisfactory fig ure the present flow by this arrangement will more than supply all electric power requirements of the daly judge and the snake creek companies na N 6 i aw r s 11 afi W w A P M bt 1 1 L showing volume of water flowing from snake creek tunnel photo by will C higgins |
