Show M mcgregor cgregor patent Skull breaker BY JNO P M LAUGHLIN the accompanying cut shows the mcgregor patent skull breaker as installed at the new smelting smelling sm elting plants of the calumet arizona mining company at douglas and the internal international dional iS melting refining company at globe arizona at the douglas plant the skull breaker has given excellent satisfaction the saving in costs in engineer E ng ineer salt lake city breaking up skulls being close to 60 per day over all previous methods at the new plant at globe chichis chis in course of erection the saving will probably be great Z 7 A trolly and grizzlies grizzlier Grizz lies of the Skull breaker at the calumet arizona er owing to change in methods of operation the scheme is receiving much favorable by a number of large plants the skull breaker break er was designed and patented by A G mcgregor of the engi firm of mcgregor of globe arizona and los angeles california an inclined chute is provided into which the skulls from the ladles are dumped di erectly by the crane at the lower end of the inclined chute a grizzly is provided which is made up of a number of caststeel cast steel units or bars so that a floor having 9 inch square openings is obtained the base of the grizz leys form a hopper which guides the material passing through the openings onto a 24 inch steel belt conveyor so constructed ted that hot slag will not injure it the conveyor carries the material that passes through the grizz leys up an incline discharging into a chute which in turn discharges in into toa a standard railroad ore car the skulls are broken into fragments so that they will pass through the grizz leys by a 2 pound weight working in a guide similar elarto to a pile driver hammer the guide for the weight and the electric hoist for raising the he t weight are supported in a trolley or gantry which has cross travel over a short bridge the short bridge in turn has a trans verse travel over a short runway so that the hammer can be spotted directly over any portion of the grizz leys in order to break up a large skull on the grizz loys leys tha ope operator ictor spots tho the trolley in a position so that the hammer is directly over the point to be struck on the skull the ha hammer amer or weight is raised to any height up to twenty five feet that the operator may deem necessary when the hoist drum is released and the weight is allowed to fall freely it can be raised and a allowed t to 0 fall as many times a as s is necessary to break a solid skull although only a few blows are usually required As fast as the fragments are made small enough to pass through the grizz leys they pass out over the conveyor and are discharged into cars the trolley and bridge travel are accomplished complis hed by means of small electric motors operated from controllers stationed in the operators cab in the trolley the weight is eleven feet long and of comparatively small cross sectional area so that it is easily retained within its guides the electric hoist is provided with two drums one is narrow and light having as little inertia as possible to resist th the e falling weight the other drum is large and has a long steel cable wound on it which passes out through a snatch block attached to the side of the pocket below an and d is used for spotting the railroad cars under the chute at the end of the conveyor the machine has a capacity of about fifty tons of the usual skulls per hour at the new plant of the international smelting smelling Sm elting company at globe the machine is being erected underneath the converter cra crane e can aisle crane runway so that the dump the skulls directly onto the grizz grizzle leys 1 12 the opening covered by the grizz leys is feet by 24 feet the material when broken through the grizz leys will be der pass to standard railroad cars under ered vered into Ii lv instead of machine being elected neath th the incline by conveyor as is done bated up a an n the calumet arizona plant at the calumet arizona plant the breaker is used only in the forenoon as a rule when it is not working a beam is placed between columns at the bottom of the inclined ned chute which prevents hot skulls containing molten slag from being emptied on the grizzley thus preventing the molten slag from running on the conveyor belt when it is not moving in the morning when they are ready to start breaking skulls the converter crane is used to lift the beam out of the way the machines are exclusively manufactured and sold by the allis chalmers manufacturing company |
