Show CHANGE IN administration in regard to the recent change in administration at the colorado school of mines golden colorado the school of mines magi mag azine of the institution makes an explanation of the conditions there the outside world has long been aware of the friction existing there which was noticeable to visitors this editorial will be of interest to alumni and others who are interested in the efforts which this institution is making in the erection of advanced mining education the editorial says we have received numerous requests tg from graduates who are living away from denver and golden to give them more of the details in regard to the recent changes in the school we have hesitated to go much into detail in this matter because we have not believed it was wise to advertise our troubles on the other hand we realize that there are a large number of graduates intensely interested in in the school and everything connected with the school who have not been so situated as to discover the facts for themselves and who look to the magazine zine for their information we have finally decided to briefly state the facts in regard to the recent changes here wherever possible we are leaving out names and motives dissensions or differences of opinion between members of the faculty and graduates of the school on ond one side and other members of the faculty other graduates and the administration on the other side started d a good 1 many years ago these differences of opinion accumulated until open ruptures or at least heated arguments developed over comparatively trivial events these differences of opinion were in regard to the curriculum ri to methods of teaching and often in regard to the proper place athletics should have in the school and also in regard to the qualifications and personality of the president two years ago these differences of opinion between the president and some members of the faculty were rather acute and a few professors were dropped or resigned and all who remained pledged themselves to support the administration in everyday every way and it was hoped then that everything would be harmonious again at the school and for the next year there was a much better feeling on every hand however tha opposition to the administration froni the outside did not cease and many events trivial in themselves added to the differences of opinion one member of the board of trustees was bitterly opposed to the president and worked continually to accomplish com his removal he was aided very much in this on the outside by some of the former professors at the school some politicians and state officials in golden and denver and also by some of the alumni A few members of the faculty were also acau accused sed of aiding in the fight made against the president however everyone directly connected with the school during the spring and fall of 1912 appeared to be working in harmony and as one of the results of this operation cooperation co mines spirit here was as strong f fi not stronger than at any time in the history of the school some of the results of this spirit and harmony were the winning of four out of five championships in athletics when for several years in the past not a single championship outside of basketball had come to golden the boys also won a prize for their exhibit in the parade of the mountain and plain festival and the general con census of opinion was that the only reason they did not get the first prize was because of local politics however the harmony was apparently too good to last and during the winter and spring decided differences of opinion in regard to athletics developed in the faculty some members of the faculty had been steadily and consistently opposed to college athletics and some thought that too much attention was being devoted to in the school these two sections of we th e faculty secured the election upon the athletic board of a member who has always been opposed to college athletics after this event trouble developed very rapidly one or two of the members of the faculty were very aggressive in disposition and when some questions in regard to the eligibility of one or more members of the baseball team came up before the faculty there was a great deal of trouble e at once impolitic things were done on both sides and impolitic remarks made and bitter feeling developed between the members of the faculty and between the students and some of the members of the faculty everyone directly connected with the school did what he could to keep the quarrels out of the newspapers as all realized the school had had entirely too much newspaper notoriety in the past we succeeded very well in this but the trouble in regard to athletics brought to a head all the differences of opinion that had been accumulating for years with the result that the board of trustees thought best to place the administration in the hands of regis chauvenet as president emeritus and william G haldane as acting president with full power to select their faculty and to make any changes in the curriculum they thought best As a result of their recommendations three of the professors george IV schneider G montague butler and carl A allen alien were dropped from the faculty and harry J wolf was elected as professor of mining in the place of george W schneider the reason given for the dropping of these three professors was that it was thought they would be unable to work harmoniously with the rest of the faculty and with one member of the board of trustees no question fuestion was raised as to their efficiency absolute harmony at the school is the demand of the new administration and the administration thought this could be best assured by the dropping of these three professors fes sors it is understood that a number of changes will be made in the curriculum b before e the school opens in the fall to the best of our knowledge the above is a plain statement of the facts |
