Show THE KING AND QUEEN MINE I 1 Da description of progress being made at western montana property vie the miner of wallace idaho contains an interesting description of the work which is being carried on at the king and queen mine in western montana which will be of interest in salt lake it says this is one of the original discoveries of the spring gulch district made just about 26 years ago it is the only property in the immediate locality equipped with a milling plant and making regular shipments of its product spring gulch opens into the missoula valley about five miles west of superior and iron I 1 mountain on the milwaukee northern pacific railroads respectively it is nearly four miles in length it is a pretty gulch or valley widening out in places and with an abundance of good timber and bunch grass one peculiarity that marks it as different from other gulches in this intermountain ter mountain country is that there Is no running water visible the underground drainage of its territory is revealed right at its mouth as a volume of water pours into the missoula river at the head of the gulch in a wide open and level space is a beautiful spot where is located the little pamp camp of keystone formerly known as carter all around this close in and at varying distances are mines and ledges in different stages of development about half a mile from the town is the concentrator of the king and queen company and on the hill above this is the mile the king and queen ledge is very favorably located for cheap development and cheap operation the handling of the product now is just as economical as could be expected at this period of development and it can and will be improved with small additional dit ional development of the mine and increased milling capacity over feet or about a mile of development work has been done on the property the present product of the mine comes from an intermediate crosscut tunnel driven to the ledge from the portal of this the ore is delivered by gravity tram 1200 feet in length and with capacity of 15 tons an hour to a track level above the crusher of the mill A tunnel nearly 1800 feet in length is now in from this track level and will reach the ledge with possibly feet extension this will be the main working tunnel when completed and connections made cutting out the tram and delivering the ore practically at the mill nearly feet of ground will be available between the present and proposed working tunnels and feet of it is known above the present working tunnel with this arrangement in effect and the principal part of the work Is already done the cost of handling the output of the mine mina and getting it to the mill will be reduced to a minimum and the arrangement ran gement is ideal compared with other conditions which are often necessarily confronted from the ledge where the present mill supply of ore is being taken 15 feet of ore is being mined this ore shoot is known to be to feet in length in general appearance it is much like the galena ore of the coeur calenes dA lenes and shows at a glance that it is good mill rock in workings above this is much higher grade ore and it is from these for many years past that periodical shipments of crude ore have been made the concentrator was put in this year it is of cf about 75 tons capacity the machinery consisting of a crusher rolls jigs and franz tables the building is so con strutted ted that its capacity can be readily increased by additional machinery the concentrates carry lead and silver values about the same as those of the coeur calenes dA lenes they are sacked at the mill hauled to the milwaukee railroad all down grade three and a half miles distant and there loaded in bulk A four horse team makes makas two trips a day and handles 10 tons As said early in the story there is no mining stream in the gulch or the ies which form it this has occasioned some trouble in milling but it can be and is being overcome no mining proposition is without some obstacles to overcome the securing of a body of marketable ore in place is the all important thing the king and queen seems to be on safe ground in this other difficulties and inconveniences are of minor importance and can be handled there is evidently ample water easily available below the surface and this the company is getting at john F hinckley of pittsburg pennsylvania is manager of the company and is in personal charge of its operation about twenty men are employed at th the ta present time numerous pittsburg people are among the stockholders G W dougherty of this city is a stockholder phil one of the discoverers of the bunker hill and sullivan was an early owner and held an interest for many years john cromie also well known in the coeur calenes dA dAl lenes eries was one of the original discoverers of the first ore in spring gulch district he is yet a stockholder in the king and queen and spends much of his time at keystone and vicinity the tonnage of spring gulch would naturally be in the territory of the mif mil waukon railroad to put a branch branah line up there would not appear at all difficult the tonnage is an important item already and nothing would stimulate its increase more than the advantage of transportation judging by the way ore tonnage and terri tory is looked ner by dalier rno mount ui i ral railroad ll 11 companies spring gulch should have advantage at no distant day |
