Show A UNIQUE CRUSHER installation special correspondence spokane wash july 11 the most unique of the many new features being installed in connection with the development of the hidden creek mines and the establishment of a mammoth marn moth 2000 ton daily capacity at granby B C by the granby Si Sm elting melting company an enterprise involving the expenditure of not less than is the underground ore storage and crusher system being worked out iby by the companas comp anys engineers this is the only one of the kind in the world according to jay P graves of spokane vice president and general manager who returned recently from a two weeks trip of inspection to the hidden creek properties hewn out of the solid rock where summer heat and winter wind and snow will not interfere with the operation of the giant rolls nor the comfort of the men in charge of the equipment is a large gallery where the crusher of tons an hour capacity together with the motors that will drive it will be installed immediately beneath the crusher station are five ore pockets of capacity each also hollowed out of the rock into which the product of the rolls will be dropped from the pockets the crushed ore is loaded into the waiting cars beneath in the main working tunnel to be transported to the furnaces and the output of the mine does not see daylight until it is ready for treatment on each of the levels above the crusher are other caverns of a combined capacity of tons where the ore broken down for removal is held in reserve for the rolls the series on each level is connected with the series below and all are united with a ton hopper over the crusher in short all the levels are connected from the surface to the crusher station by a continuation of storage bins and the ore extracted even in the upper levels is handled by gravity until it reaches the cars the system providing approximately tons of storage space this plan obviates the expense of constructing and maintaining timber ore bins and the weather does not interfere with operations construction and development at granby bay is progressing rapidly and on july 1 there were 1125 men on the payroll 2 said mr air graves equipment equipment for the machine shops which are the last word in construction and mechanical features and which will enable us to make any required repairs for our mine and smelter machinery is being placed the brick plant where we will mall manufacture all our brick is ready for the machinery which is arriving and the ground has s been stripped and the railway siding laid id so that he will be ready to begin mak 1119 g brick soon the steel for the furnaces and converter rooms oms is on the ground except the roof trusses which were too long to be handled by the boats plying between vancouver and granby bay necessitating the purchase of a vessel to deliver them this is being loaded now and will be towed to the site in a few days delay in delivery of this material has retarded operations a little but we plan to have everything ready to operate by january 1 1914 the hotel a 40 room structure modern in every respect is completed and will b be ca occupied july 15 and our hospital which is up to date in every particular is under construction the infirmary will have six private wards and one large ward together with operating and dressing rooms culinary and storage departments and will provide every facility for caring for the ill and injured another innovation of which we are particularly proud is the recreation hall to be erected and maintained by the company for the comfort and convenience of its em aloyes in the basement will be bowling alleys a gymnasium and plunge and shower baths the second floor will be devoted to billiard and card rooms and a library and the third floor will be arrant arranged led as quarters for attendants and hotel attaches we are building a model town at granby bay and already the streets have been graded sidewalks laid electric lights ana anu a telephone system installed and a sewage system the most of which is in commission serving all the place is nearly completed we have built dwellings for use of our married employed emp loyes at a nol nominal minal rent containing two to six rooms each with bath lavatory hot and cold water and electric lights and are planning everything to keep keel the place thoroughly sanitary the company store housed in a three story building is operating and doing an average daily business of 1000 it is equipped with a cold storage supplied with ice from our own plant and all meats and other perishable food is shipped in refrigerator vessels and transferred immediately to this department A drug store is run in connection the canadian government t has established a postoffice post office and also has 1 appointed a police magistrate and stationed a detachment of the government consta uary there |
