Show THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS special correspondence los angeles june 24 what is believed will prove the most intense pre convention campaign of the american mining congress has been begun in this city although that national mining organization does not meet until september 26 it will remain in session until october 1 making an entire week of convention the convention this year is being exploited by the sierra madre club an organization of a social character composed entirely of large mining and oil men from all portions of the united states A special committee has been appointed to assume complete charge of the convention details and extensive offices have been opened in the columbia trust building the top floor of which is occupied by the sierra madre club and a staff of assistants has been installed three thousand for 1910 is the slogan adopted by the club boosters boasters bo indicating the high hopes they hold regarding the probable attendance and an energetic campaign will be prosecuted to effect this result one thing which will make for greater attendance this year than ever before in the history of the american mining congress will be the addition of the oil men to the ranks of the membership none but metal and coal operators and smelting smelling sm elting men having previously previous y been identified with it special excursions are already being planned by a representative delegation of oil men from this city to many of the most important oil fields of the southwest with a view to enlisting the operation cooperation co of this new branch and to arrange for the oil mens attendance at the congress the greatest hopes tor a record attendance however lies in the fact that the american mining congress after three years of hard struggle has induced the passage of a bill in washington providing for a federal bureau of mines which means governmental recognition of mining after years of virtual neglect of the subject by this victory in the face of determined opposition on the part of powerful forces which did not want to see mining pass beyond the control of ahe geological survey the aling congress has proven that it has finally become a power in national legislation and its members generally now realize that it will only take one more determined ter mined effort to secure fullest recognition this effort will crystallize cryst alize at the coming mining convention |
