Third street car and two on the th other car were thrown out of ot i their seats and badly shaken up Fog Caused Accident The cause of the accident was the dense fog that enveloped the city mak making makIng ing It almost Impossible for persons to see even eveh a house as far as across the street and the lack of any specific regulations as to which switch the cars on the two lines shall pass each other The motormen did not see each others cars until they the were within fifty feet of or each other and then both reversed their levers else the results Jr fr would undoubtedly have been far more serious The accident occurred at In the morning about feet from the Third East switch where the cars should have passed each other Car CarNo CarNo CarNo No 97 91 on the Third street line In charge mass of ot wreckage Not a whole window pane was left In ip either car and pieces of or wreckage were scattered In every di dl direction direction Farrow was pinned in so tightly that an ax had to be used to chop him out He was bleeding profusely and was un unconscIous conscious He was carried to the home of Dr H D Niles nearby and was later removed to the Holy Cross hos hospital hospital hospital pital where Dr J S Richards the company physician attended him His skull was found to be fractured and an operation was performed Immediately to remove a piece of the skull and some clotted blood from his brain At a late hour last night he had not regained consciousness and the doctors say there Is small chance for his recovery The Tha others who were injured were brought downtown in another r car and had their cuts dressed A wrecking crew was sent out and the battered cars were taken to the barn The primary prImar cause of the accident according to the carmen was the dense I fog The next cause they say sa is the fact that there Is no set rule about where the Third street and South Tem Tern Temple TempIe pIe cars shall pass Motorman Davis story of the accident is as follows I Davis Tells of Collision I 1 stopped on the east side of State 1 street and picked up a passenger The j I Third street car had not passed me on onI I I the State street switch and I expected t to meet it on the Third East switch The fog was so 50 thick that I could not see anything more than fifty feet in front of me I knew that sometimes I the Third street car ran past the switch and I was careful to keep a watch I for it itI itI I r shut my mJ power off at the cutout I just east of State and then started up again I ran for some distance then threw my power off o and allowed the car to coast along I was due at the switch at 20 and just at 19 I spied the I Third street car through the mist J j cI I 1 immediately reversed my lever Jever I and when wh n I 1 saw SaV that the cars were sure to come together I jumped and barely hit the ground gr und before betor the crash came I saw later that Farrow Farro had bad reversed his too t o but u the e tracks were so slippery that it had no effect Then too the Third street car had an auto automatic automatic automatic matic blowout that shut the current off when the car was reversed and of course the reversing did no good I Iwas Iwas Iwa was wa not running at the ordinary speed when the collision occurred and I dont donta a think Farrow was either I I L L a I J f r j i w 7 0 1 1 tj i S Sk 4 t TN IN STREET CAB CAR COLLISION a k I L L L LL a a a L the platform He did so Just In time to save his life The next instant there was a crash and the big Third street streetcar car ar plowed through the vestibule of the Brigham street car ear tearing it com corn completely from the car The platform of the Third street car was mashed flat t against the front of the car Motorman Farrow was caught and pinned between the two cars A piece of wreckage Jammed his head back against the door and crushed his skull Hf II had no chance for escape what whatever whatever whatever ever for the high iron gates on either side Bide of him were vere shut and fastened and a n man stood on either side of hIm Mm The door to his rear was shut and locked He was forced to stand and take hat came One of the men on the front platform Jumped over the gate Just in time to escape The other Mr Bennett at attempted tempted to Jump but was caught and received several severe cuts about the face see C Conductor Palmer who was VIas on the rear platform was thrown through the gass door and had his face severe severely severely severely j ly cut The Tho passengers were thrown r Tv T TT TT rw T i The trouble was though that there Is no rule about which switch we shall pass paz on and we never know where we weare weare weare are until we see each other If It had been clear It Jt would have been all right but In the fog we w had bad to go at it blind ly Iy The carmen on all the lines attribute Farrows injury to the fact that his gates were shut and he had no means of Jumping The rule of the company Is said one man that gates on both sides of the front end must be closed and fastened all the time The door has to be closed and thus a motorman is left In a pen If he sees that a collision is coming he cant Jump for the gates hold him In this way all means me ns of ot escape for a motorman are shut off The motormen have been dissatisfied with this rule for a long time and they hope now that this accident will result In a revision of the rule Both of ot the motormen on the could collid ing cars have been in the service for several years and were considered very careful men Farrow has hns been with the company ten years He has a wife and five bye children living on N street His l wife was notified and went to the hos hospital pital with hIm |
