Show t ! 1 i i SAYING THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT TIME . . Jor Harman Perry of Ogden said a mouthful when he ; i stated that the liquor commissioners are unwelcome in Ogden. "I see by the papers," said Mayor Peery, "that the liquor 'i commissioners have threatened to move to Ogden if the Salt j Lake officials don't stop bothering them about fire hazards in i the liquor stores and the warehouse. j; "It is my understanding that Salt Lake City is becoming j very tired of the liquor commission. As president of the State . t Municipal league, I have had occasion to contact numerous city t omciais ana i una tnat the liquor commission is unwelcome f; anywhere in the state. !j "Admittedly, the legislature botched up the liquor law at ,:; the last session, but it left one virtue in thq law, namely that :! empowering the liquor commission to make its ow decisions, within reasonable limits. That body has failed, in every respect, to follow out the spirit of the law. "The question of whether they move to Ogden, a suggest-i suggest-i km that obviously is only a threat, is one for them to decide. . As mayor of Ogden, I still have only one vote on the city com-.,: com-.,: mission, and that vote would be against permitting them to I enter the city. As a matter of fact, if J had my way, and it were j legally possible, I would refuse, to grant them a, license. ? t Mayor Peery's blunt statement of what he thinks of the j; liquor commission shows that he is fearless; and is not afraid to I speak his mind when necessary. "i The machine politicians in the Democrat party fear Mr. j Peery, because he may become an independent candidate for governor. He, is a life-long Democrat. He thinks the political machine of Utah is bad, and that the only way it can be smash-i smash-i ed is to elect an independent governor, who is uncontrolled by i organized machines. Mr. Peerv thinks, and iustlv so. that it is about time for the people; of Utah to elect a chief executive I who will have the welfare of the people of Utah uppermost in i his heart. j : The liquor commission's slam at the Salt Lake City conv i mission gave, Mayor Peery a chance toj say the right thing at the right time and, without a doubt, he gained thousands of j: . friends. Mr. Peery could not have said anything more timely. i Yes, the liquor commission made political thunder for Har- ; man Peery, a gubernatorial possibility. Utah Labor News. |
