Taft when he ved at the Denver Rio Grande depot yesterday and was welcomed by the most enthusiastic crowds ever seen in Salt lake Everybody took a holiday and made it his business to see the President President President dent From Prom the time the chief magistrate left his special train until he arrived at the Knutsford shortly before midnight he received one continuous ous ovation Accustomed as he is to ovations Pres 1 lc nt Taft said to Governor William Spry that he had bad never received a more cordial welcome At the t Rio Grande depot were assembled a men women and Children J numbering dent know he was welcome People craned their necks for a first sight and then ran ahead or took some HOme short cut so go they could see President Taft Tatt again They seemed never to tire looking at Procession As the procession lon made its itil way to Fort Furt Douglas dozens dozen of automobiles and carriages arriage fell in behind until they made a line many blocks long Jong R Resi wi along the route were beautifully di decorated orated and whenever the President rode by a house where old glory snowed showed prominently he inclined his uncovered head toward the flag Stationed on the west side Bide of Brigham street treet artillerymen of the national guard began the Presidential salute of guns as soon as they caught ight sight of the chief magistrate The ar were about yards from the to arrive before the auto which hick w proceeded only as fast as the band could march Every now and then somebody who had bad voice enough left ett to cheer started another ovation and when the President President dent stepped from the machine to re review review review view the troops there was a hoarse roar of cheers that told of exhausted lungs and strained vocal cords The scene here was wall a brilliant military spectacle with the added importance the ruler of this nation gives to any affair to which he lends his presence President Taft stepped out on the sward award and stood by seen seena a President Pre before and none of them had seen Been any other President like this one An Impressive Figure President Taft was an impressive fig figure figure figure ure as he stood there His Hie smile had disappeared and a dignity quite as em emphatic emphatic i as his good humor had been earlier in the day hedged him in Stern uncompromising and watchful he eyed the soldiers with a generals eye Taller and bigger than the biggest of them he to tower above them in mind as well as body Here was apparent the majesty that sur surrounds surrounds surrounds rounds a ruler for in an empire they would have said He is every inch a aking aking aking king Certainly no ruler in the world even attired in all his panoply of state would have appeared as dignified and impressive as the huge President clad cladin cladin cladin in a black frock coat of the cut that used to be known as 8 Prince Albert his hl light trousers trou ers and shiny silk hat The evolutions began in the rear of actual time he was s reviewing the troops President Taft seemed to be en enjoying enjoying himself hugely hugel The review he seemed to regard as part of his days work After it was over he turned to Gov GOY Governor Governor Spry and Senator Smoot who es escorted escorted him back to his auto Captain Butts and the secret service men fol followed followed followed lowed The crowd cheered as the Pres President PresIdent President ident turned to face tace them and every everyman everyman everyman man removed his hat as 8 the President passed by b Then there was another rush for some vantage point where here an another another another other glimpse of the President might I be caught but to most mo t It was futile for his auto traveling a snails pace so as asI I not to run over the band with quite as much solemnity as if it I some om hostile army instead of a populace that idolized their President menaced them Although this ended the publics part in the reception re for the day all were loth to go home The people who i journeyed to the fort for the occasion hung about the grounds notwithstanding ii it was walt authoritatively announced the President would not make his reappear ance until 9 the hour for the I banquet Greets the Children Meanwhile as the President entered Colonel Scotts residence the colonels lit ht little littie tie tle daughter was on the porch The Pres President President ident stopped and greeted her bel quite aa aes gravely snavely as if she had been b n a Il grownup He Re spoke in kindly tones and alid then re reappeared reappeared reappeared appeared his contagious smile Of course cours the little girl flustered as she was t too It took her ten minutes t to tell the other children of the tho post about it and then most of them insisted on see Flee seeing FleeIng ing lug the President At t first their elders eIders frowned upon the Idea but soon the President himself heard about it and last night if there was any child at Fort Port Douglas who could not boast of shaking hands bands with the President it was his own OWR fault for the President smiled at them and shook their hands He seemed to en enjoy enjoy enjoy joy doing it too The reception to the tho officers and their women was a pretty social function and the guests of honor enjoyed every min minute minute minute ute of ot it Colonel and Mrs Irs Scott Captain Cap Captain Captain tain and Mrs Bryan Conrad and Captain Butts Butta helped the President receive Many of the officers at the fort and their wo womenfolk womenfolk womenfolk too had met President Taft when he was Philippine commissioner and afterward governor general Others were Introduced to Captain Butts who presented pre presented presented them to the President The reception re reception was not the ordinary society af at affair affair fair fall President Tafts faculty for restoring was never nevermore nevermore nevermore more aptly displayed Tho The presentations had no more than been accomplished than he was the center of an admiring throng answering questions right and left and many of the fair sex present will treas treasure treasure treasure ure for years some of the pretty
