Show MORE OF THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ESTRA Monday evening was marked by rath rather er an unusual event In Salt Lake A Avery Aery Avery very ery large audience gathered In the First Congregational church to meet Mr L A Torrens of Chicago a man i iwho who has been identified with the cause of good music for half a century He has DaS had intimate relations with sym symphony symphony symphony phony orchestras since the days of the theold theold theold old Boston organization perhaps the parent of its kind in the United States And he had a few words wards to say relative to the cause of the symphony orchestra in Salt Lakes Lake The substance of at what he said is If It Itt Ift Ct t Lake wants a good symphony or orchestra orbe orchestra chestra be Salt Lake will have to spend t lff X or at least Invest a good deal of at money Mr Torrens puts the amount needed at That sum properly invested would with the moneys received for ad admissions admissions missions to the concerts provide for a thoroughly company And the thousands of ot people in Salt Lake and in Utah would possess the means of musical culture which could never be acquired In any other way for tor a hun hundred hundred hundred dred times that amount The statement seems a perfectly rea reasonable reasonable reasonable one And we do not believe it itIs itIs itis Is Impossible to add enough money to the fund already in hand to complete the If that result could be at attained attained attained there would be many more con concerts concerts concerts in the season than are possible now The quality would be better be because because because cause the fund would permit paying the musicians for rehearsals absolutely necessary necessary necessary essary for a finished performance Salt Lake has the best streets in the world the most beautiful homes schools of the highest efficiency churches not rivaled In any city and a financial em eminence emInence eminence which is never challenged Also Salt Lake people love good mu music music music sic In no ordinary way can they be provided with the means of at developing an orchestra equalling aqualUng their other mer merits merIts merits its struggled with the same problem and finally solved it by raising a fund which made the orchestra secure and Independent forever The Tho fund raised there was and with it ita ita ita a building was erected dedicated to the orchestra and to Theodore Thomas And the rentals from that building make am ample ample ample provision for all needed funds Nothing could better serve the higher demands of life here than a similar ef effort effort effort fort on the part of ot our people No mil fund is needed But the sum sum that is needed can be secured and it will provide for Salt Lake and for Utah Just what the Chicago orchestra Is provid providing providIng providing ing for the countless thousands of peo people young and old who every year share In its blessings I |
