the state at the special yesterday voted against the levy lag of a tax for the purpose of If erecting a state capitol building The proposition imposition was defeated by a majority maj of about 2800 Salt Lake county count voted In favor of ot the tax tl x levy lev but almost every other county in the state voted against t tIt It One of the principal reasons for the de defeat defeat feat eat of the proposition was the lack of a strong campaign in favor of it In Salt Lake City only a very small per cent of the taxpayers voted Ved at all nil Throughout the state the vote ote was sas about 10 per cent of what it was last fall faIl A strong fac factor facto tor toi to that militated against the proposition to build a new capitol was an active campaign against the thc move by the people of Ogden and Weber eber county The people of Weber county apparently felt that if it i ithe the move to leyy a tax assessment for fO a anew anew anew new capitol were defeated there would be bean bean bean an opportunity to secure leCure the state capitol for Ogden As a result the people of Weber county voted almost unanimously a the measure Federal Feder Bunch Rebuked The returns of the election throughout the tile state are said to t 0 reflect the personal p unpopularity Of f the machine politicians politician with whom Governor Spry has sur stir surrounded surrounded rounded himself The proposition to build a new pew capitol was a pet measure of the governor and of his political colleagues The returns showed that there were those who voted against the measure m asure merely mr ly because they did not wish to glorify those now low In power That there maj ma mahave mahave have been some justification for the open opposition to the glorification of these persons even though this would have been the lesser of the two evils is evi evidenced evidenced evidenced by the fact that already ready through the official organ the th political ring had begun to take credit to Itself for the proposed erection of a new state capitol Though the returns from the different counties which were almost all against the proposition were surprise the real blame for the defeat of the measure must rest with the people of Salt Lake county The lethargy on the part of the taxpayers can only OIlI be explained by the fact that there was no organized move moo ri the county favoring the proposition With a little energy votes could have hav een en must r l for or the proposition ii n 1 the county count which would have given a handsome majority for Cor the capitol capital Party Workers Indifferent Less than of the persons en entitled entitled entitled titled to vote for the capitol went to the polls In every precinct of the city and county the vote was very light but those who did vote voted for the move movement movement movement ment The rhe proposition to increase the tax levy carried in every precinct of the city and county but there were so few votes cast that the majority of 2600 for the capitol in Salt Lake county count did not offset the majority of about against the proposition in the rest of the state In Salt Lake all parties favored the movement and American and Demo Democratic cratic party leaders offered their services to the Republicans to assist In carrying the elections Since the proposition originated origInated mated with a Republican governor and a Republican legislature it was felt that the Republican party organization which proved so effective last fall In causing a Republican landslide in Salt Lake county should take tie the Initiative For some un unexplained unexplained explained ed reason the Republican organization tion appeared to be strangely Inactive No campaign subscriptions were raised N 11 0 work was done and the offers of ot as assistance assistance from other parties were un en unheeded heeded The result showed that a three 6 day vigorous campaign would have hae won the election Spry Keenly Disappointed Governor Spry was greatly disappointed dl last night when the returns indicated be beyond beyond beyond yond any doubt that the capitol building proposition had been lost at yesterdays election When Shen ben asked to make a state statement statement statement ment of his opinion as to why the tM prop proposition had failed to carry he said sald saidI I do not nol no wish to discuss the matter at
