Show BINGHAM CAMP TO LEAD BUTTE Four Mines in Utah Camp Will Soon Be Mining More Ore Than All Butte COMPARISON NOW POSSIBLE BY GEORGE L WALKERS STORY I ON NORTH NORTHERN ERN DISTRICT i George L Walker ot or the Boston Corn Com Commercial mercial who has been doin doing the camp of at Butte turns out some highly interesting dope on that camp A portion ot of his communication Is here reproduced as it t o a nicety what may be ex expected fro from Bingham operations durIng the next twelve months Mr Walker alker that the camp ot of Butte Is now pro producing producing tons of at ore d daily Uy His figures show that the average of at all the copper ores mined In the district is only a lit littie tIe better than 3 per cent with C ant associate values In silver and gold insignificant In comparIson with the aver averRe average Re age ot of these metals In the mines ot of fling Bing Bingham ham and other Utah camps Butte has been twenty years getting things down to such Buck a fine poInt that It can accurately figure the sliver and gold contents ot of Its ores It will take sOme time to reach that stage tage In Utah but the history ot of the HIghland Boy the Boston Consolidated Utah Copper C Cactus Columbus Consoli Consolidated Consolidated dated Mammoth and ether contributors to the copper wealth or It the Utah dIstricts will make it plain when they get down to figuring that Butte has no edge over oer Utah In that re that this state In reality will beat the northern camps record a city block Bingham Will Lead Butte During the next few months and within a year Bingham will be handling more copper ore ot of an average grade as good as that ot of Butte than the northern camp Is now turning out The Copper company compan alone will be hand ling hug tons a day The Boston Consol will be treating tons In Its new newmill newmill mill and probably be marketing 1000 tons of sulphides a day as well The Ohio Copper will be handling at least zo 50 tons P day in Its two mills and the Utah Consolidated will be steadily grind ing away on Its 1000 iO tons a da day It if It does increase These mines then will be producing nearl nearly if not quite just As much ore as the entire camp ot of Butte is producing today But there are a number ot of other mInes to be reckoned with as well The Yampa wilt will be producing close to tons ot of better than 3 per cent ore the Bingham Consolidated CommercIal and Dalton Lark mines will from to tons more the States mInes 40 tons tile the For Fortuna Fortuna tuna ro tons and not less than a dozen others will be contributing from SO 5 to tons each By thIs time next year ear oco tons of ore a da day will not begin to touch the product of at the In lew ot of these facts the followIng comment or Butte b by Mr Walker Valker will be read with added interest here Buttes Past Production It is estimated that since the tion of copper ore began the ot of all the mInes on the Butte hill has aggregated aggregated gated tons and that it If taken Irom a single vein eln ro 0 feet wide and feet long it would have exhausted it to toa toa a depth of 1000 feet teet From these fIgures I estimate that Butte has produced at al ready leady approxImately pounds ot of copper opper This Is approxImately as much as aU all the mInes In the world can now pro duce in two years There Is a considerable variation In the sliver silver values contained In the copper ores of Butte The ores in a fo few mInes arry as low as halt half an ounce for each per cent 2 pounds ot of copper Others carry arrY an ounce for each per cent ot of cop copP P ar and still sUIl others contain 2 ounces There Is an average of at ot of a cent In Ingold Ingold gold and 1 cents in sliver sIlver secured with each pound ot of copper produced Precious metal values therefore aggregate t annually The deepest shaft In the Butte district is the High Ore which Is now down feet A strike ot of and glance was made the other da day at the very bottom ot of this shaft This indicates that the re remarkable enrIchment ot of the Butte veins extends on down below the deepest mining levels Massive copper glance Is found In the level of the Anaconda mine Tho statement so often otten made that the mines of Butte are running Into Iron at depth Is untrue There has been an in increase Increase crease In the percentage ot of Iron In the concentrating ores but It js is so o exceed small that It has no significance It Itis is 8 In a measure unfortunate as a little larger percentage of Iron In Its ores will wiil IH help lp out decIde decidedly at the smelters What Mines Are Doing Now rhe mines of Butte are now putting out a total ot of tons or of ore daB daily It Ields an average ot of about jj 65 pounds ot of cO cooper per to the ton making the dally daily pro ot of the dIstrict only a little less than ItO 1000 pounds ot of refined copper There has has been no material Increase In fn the gross productIon ot of thIs district In the past fIve or te tep years ears Formerly the thc largest mines were worked chlell chiefly for the I 11 grades of ore and the big tonnage ot of I 7 per cent to u 12 per cent ores oree were ye re responsible for the astonishing annual pro figures of former years ears At pr s sc c nt the largest companIes go on the prin principle ciple that all the ore are that will yIeld a profit should be extra ted and treated This has made maIe possible a big rela tive decrease in operating expenses and it will tremendously lengthen the lives of the tho mines hIt it is estimated that there Is a total of to tons ot of ore blocked out outi 11 i sIght and ready for mining In the Butte district This Is i to keep all exIsting mills and smelters here In op operation operation for five years On a cop per market this ore would have a net alue of about with copper at cents O and on cent copper |
