Slate Postmasters association today to hold their DOS 1008 convention at American Fork The date was was not fixed Joseph Odell Odeil postmaster at Logan was elected The other officers elected were Maitti fourth vice Ice I presIdent Peters of American Fork secretary and t treasurer S W V Ross of Lehl assistant secretary and treasurer One or of the most successful conventions of the postmasters of Utah ever held in inthe the state closed this forenoon It was I claimed that the convention was the ye re I suit of much good derived by the post postmasters postmasters masters of Utah and the fourth annual convention closed with good wishes for Mantra Manti S postmaster and her citizens gen I emIly I IThe The convention was held In the hi high h school bUilding and President A 1 L Thom Thomas I as presided with hIs usual dignity mixed with humor Mayor L R It Anderson gave the opening speech of welcome extending the freedom ot of Mant to the visiting post postmasters postmasters masters He saId ald the tho postmasters would have an opportunity to go through the temple which caused Postmaster Clove ot of Provo to Inquire or of Mr Madsen the local postmaster If that was really a tact fact Mr Clove seemed somewhat astonished at the remark As the tho Mantl temple is the only one of the Ule four temples that has an arch runnIng the entire width of the magnIficent cent structure the Provo Prove postmaster ac actually realized the expression made by Mayor Anderson Anderon l Mr love gave a happy happ response to the mayors speech A communication from Inspector Durand was read to the convention In whIch he expressed his regrets that It was Impossible sible for tor him to attend tho convention Thomas Speaks Postmaster Thomas then gave gae an iii talk of the excellence of the tho postal system which Is the best in the world as a whole lie Hc spoke of the infancy of the postal service serice and of the tremendous strides which had been made In ill Jj years ears At that early period there were only onh post offices In t the e country countr today there are with over 2 The length of mall routes had Increased from to liS ill miles and every working day malt mall travels a distance equal to fifty five fhe times circumference or of the globe The number of pieces of mall handled In Increased Increased creased from 2000 pieces to over dally daily The postal Income Increased from oooo years ago to In 1906 Mr Thomas gave other figures to show I Ithe the growth of the postal system He said I Ithe the greatest progress had been made along the lines of I tern had Increased to routes with i Yi carriers This was a most Important service In some respect the rural citi citizen zen Is more fortunate than his neIghbor of the city The rural carrier sells stamps and money mOlley orders and can take up mall mail at atone atone one portion of his toute and deliver it at another He thus becomes a special uns for the patron In the cities the carriers cannot sell orders and deliver man mail collected on their routes Free delivery service has been extended also to citizens residing on star routes In 1006 over Oer families were served President Thomas said one of the best Indications or of the growth or of the postal system Is the difficulty In securing dif different different ferent names He said there was a story told In the postoffice department that a postoffice was asked for by some citizens of Virginia The name suggested was not satisfactory The citizens told the de department department to select the name The clerk looking at felt in every office in Increased salaries to clerks and allowances to postmasters The roll was next called and forty post postmasters postmasters masters responded which Is said to be one of the largest representations known since the organIzation came Into existence There were In all fifty visitors Discussion of Troubles Postmaster Wilson of Sandy took up the subject ot of salary allowances which de developed developed the liveliest dIscussion of the ses session slon sion and caused the Introduction of the following resolution Resolved That we favor the payment or of adequate salaries to the postal em or of the tIia third class offices and the enactment of a law which will provide for a gradual annual Increase of salaries of clerks until the maximum salary of Is reached Resolved That we wc call the of the congressional delegation of Utah to the unusual conditions which exist In re relation relation lation to the employment In third class of flees because ot of the tte inadequate salaries paId as It Is now difficult to obtain com competent help es In private are paId higher her salaries than are paid hard worked postal In the third class offices In the tho Interest or of better postal services we urge that provisions be made for the payment of higher salaries Re Resolved That we favor tavor the enactment of a 8 law providing an allowance b by the government for rent light and fuel for tor of the fourth class and that the schedule be changed of commissions to per cent of the first per cent of the second and LO per cent of the balance 7 This closed the first session and the vIsitors were provided with carriages and visited the principal places of Interest Postmaster Clove or of Provo having the prIvilege of passing through the large arch whIch forms part of the eat east lower part of the tho mple which fulfilled the promIse of Mayor Anderson After enjo enjoying dinner at the Tuttle hotel the convention again commenced Work at The session opened with a the discussion favored a more aggressive campaIgn In this particular Miss Jessie Crawford ot of Manti then sang sanga a solo and the dIscussIon of registry mat matter ter by br Postmaster Poulson of Richfield closed the evening session Postmaster Madsen of Manti lanU then In Invited invited his guests to attend a banquet pre prepared prepared pared at his home where the visitors were entertained
