and the ability to transfer his thoughts and ideas to the cold types of the newspaper col column column column in a way wa to attract and hold attention Atten Attention tion the man who unquestionably cut considerable figure fi Ure in making the world worl understand the possibilities of the Ely and Yerington copper districts of Nevada and who excused his extravagant pictures of the buried wealth of the Ely camp for example by declaring that the world was hard liard to arouse and who emphasized his claim dalm that Ely ElJ contained a solid body of I ore two to four tour miles wide eight miles I long Jon and several hundred feet thick by bJ I saying that no one oneS could prove he was wrong Is at It again This time he devotes his energies to a characteristic description of what has been and Is being done by the Utah Cop Copper Copper per r company and an equally characteristic tic story ou o the advent of Charles M lI MacNeill and ana his Utah Copper associates Into the Arizona copper field As th thO y tah Copper crowd so called is un any unquestionably questionably preparing to follow Its rounding out of the Utah Copper enter enterprise enterprise prise by the building up of the Ray Con Consolidated Consolidated Consolidated undertaking in Arizona the fol following following following lowing article sent out by Fitz Mack from front Phoenix will be read with all kinds of Interest by bJ men identified with cop copper copper copper per mining here and elsewhere The advent of the Salt Lake crowd crowdu into copper mining in Arizona looks certain certain certain tain to prove an epochal event Arizona now leads the world in the production of copper leads Montana and Michigan by bya byL a L very long lead the former Cormer by pounds the latter by h a year That was for 1907 My II judgment is 15 that her lead Iad will be as good as that this year and probably a little better copper output Is produced at ata ata ata a lower cost than any an other region in the world Is able to produce an equal quan quant t tt ty observe I say sayan an equal quantity Arizona does not produce her hf r copper opper at as Iny f iw tw a cost us bS Utah but Utah does not nc probably never can an produce as much copper as Arizona the deposits The most admirable copper mining minin done in the th United States today is that done by b bt bythe t the ie It Utah Copper COPIer at Bingham Canyon near noar 1 ar Salt T ake Lake Their treatment nt plant at Garfield Beach on oil the shore of or Great Salt Palt lake is now handling tons a day da mined by b steam shovels from their Bing Bingham ham liam canyon property and the tIle company is earning arning t 70 per cent n a 1 year on its capital capitalization capitalization with copper r at 13 1 cents That tells tf the story stor of r the cost of pro prod d for the or ore is a very vcr f averaging slightly less than 2 Pr Ir cent copper 15 cents gold and 16 cents Iver per ton It 11 sustains my m oUre statement that the th SaU Salt are the cleverest copper miners min rs In the world when Rhen It to ores The Utah Copper company compan has planned to increase the capacity of its treatment plant unit by b unit till It reaches 1200 tons a day da They have a vast ore body bo or orthey orthey orthey I they produce that much ore The enterprise is dominated by a great mind or they never would produce it no mat matter matter matter I ter how much ore or they might have hae in the I ground gound I Charles M U MacNeill formerly of Phila Philadelphia Philadelphia delphia later of or Colorado C lorado Springs and Cripple Creek but now of Salt Lake Is the genius of or the Utah Copper company which Is distinctly recognized as the fin finest finest finest est though not the largest copper enter enterprise enterprise enterprise prise In the world today Launching Big Enterprise The Utah Copper crowd acquired the Ray Bay property In the spring of 1907 J and a number umber of Los Angeles business and pro professional professional professional men were taken in as ground floor investors all followers of or Seely Seel W V Mudd and Philip Wiseman Iseman Los Angeles mining engineers en of high reputation Mudd Wiseman I believe brought the proposition to the thc attention of or MacNeill and his Salt Lake crowd They knew him from his Cripple Creek days where all were bucking their luck In the same camp genius always ran to the handling of propositions It did in Cripple Creek Crek where he was among amon the th first to work out the different problems o 0 successfully concentrating the tellurium ores of that camp Most olost operators cannot figure on the handling of very verJ sulphide cop copper copper copper per ores The loss of or metal in the process processor of or concentration always 25 23 to 40 JO per cent appalls them and the necessity for en enlisting enlistIng enlisting listing very Cr large capital for the exten extensive extensive extensive sive and expensive plant required to do dothe dothe dothe the business on a large enough scale to show an attractive profit appalls them some more The milling millin of gold and sil silver silver ver ores has spoiled them for the milling of or copper ores filled their minds with the ineradicable bigotries of the mining craft always try to make too high a saving You can make just as aa high a saving milling copper as milling gold but it will not pay pa A pound of gold It worth 2340 times as much as a pound of or copper coppe Consequently Con ton Consequently you Jou can afford to spend a d good deal more money mone to recover it great Arizona proposition Is in many man points strikingly like his great Utah proposition but it appears to be bc a good deal bigger in volume three or four times as big bland bigand and a little richer In the average tenor of or the output It is dis a very cry sulphide ore but it averages six pounds more mor of to the ton and probably from front 10 to 15 la cents more in gold and silver per ton than the Utah property I would estimate that it is worth close to a dollar a ton more than his Utah ore Needs Big Capital It chances that I had examined and re reported reported reported ported on this great Ray property for a client myself before the MacNeill crowd took it over and so I am able to speak closely as to Its merits I advised my client to take It at the price asked but I J advised him also that it would be a hope less enterprise without a working cap ital including cost of operating plant of three millions He was a wealthy man having good mining experience and plen plenty plenty plenty ty of courage and he wanted it but it got past him somehow and fell to Mac Neill and his followers I am confident that It tt Is destined to rank ultimately as one of Ahe greatest producers in Arizona and Arizona leads the world It has now ved up by bJ shafts drifts dr tunnels and drill holes over four times s the acreage of the Utah Cop Copper Copper Copper per company compan 82 acres as against acres And AmI It has a great acreage undeveloped unde undeveloped vel but believed to be valuable MacNeill took over the property pro pert I think on the advice of Mudd Wiseman and these naturally drew In their own Los LosAn Angeles An eles following just as MacNeill drew drewin in iris ills Salt Lake and Colorado Springs Sprin s I following as ground round floor people Mudd is now supervising su engineer and Wise AVise Wiseman man engineer in charge with his hLo resi residence residence residence dence at the property Sherwood Aldrich of Colorado Springs is president of the company probably representing MacNeill McNeill l but himself a man of wide mining exper experience experience experience and of proven ability They have been prospecting the ground with about forty fort miners and two churn drills for Cor a year and a half and are now almost ready to break out on a systematic scheme of or vast development Tremendous Earnings Possible The ore presents a milling problem closely Identical with that of the Utah property a disseminated sulphide in a matrix that makes a troublesome amount of talc really a a hydrated h white mica under the stamps This will inevitably entail a large loss of the copper It does everywhere eer where But they claim to be now saving 73 75 per cent I of the metallic values alues in the great new concentrators at Ely EIo Net Nev No on a similar ore and they should do as s well at Ray RaJ That means a saving on a 2 u per cent centore centore centore ore of about pounds of cop copper copper copper per to the ton 1 think it perfectly safe to calculate on a saving saxing of thirty pounds i of copper the ton and 23 cents in gold and silver sliver That strikes western miners as I hopelessly low But It hopeless at atall atI atall all Only one mine in the whole Michigan I field averages as high as that I It requires very verJ nice management very I skillful very bold and on a great scale I to make a profit on so low a grade of I sulphide ore as that But it is fully up to the value alue of the Ely ores and a little better than the ores on which the Utah Copper is now with copper at its present price earning 70 per cent a year earon on its capitalization as shown by bJ the last of official tidal report In every particular save only onh the smelt smelting ing ng of the concentrates the cost at Ray should be slightly less than in the Utah property and in all aU respects fully as low lowI I I think a trifle lower as in the Nevada Consolidated at Ely I would estimate 10 to 15 5 cents a ton less cost than at Ely This trifling but on an output of 1000 tons a day da it makes a diff dif ference in profit earned of or to toa a day the Interest at 10 per cent on near nearly nearly nearly ly I confidently expect to see seethe seethe seethe the Ray property outputting tons tonsa a day within five years Jears and any econ economy economy omy that saves 10 cents a ton on that out output output output put will mean an additional profit of 1000 a day It has taken four years to put Utah Copper on a basis and with MacNeill himself at the wheel It will take nc longer to put the Ray Con Consolidated Consolidated on live t the same footing Where Smelting May Be Done DoneAs As for the smelting that may cost a trifle more than In Utah coke will be higher The Ray people will probably smelt their vast tonnage of of or concentrates at the big smelting and plant of the great mine fifteen miles up the Gila from their mill millI I This latter property Is the greatest unde undeveloped undeveloped undeveloped piece of or copper ground in Anzona Ari An Arizona Arizona zona and being bein In the limestone its cop copper copper copper per is largely In the carbonate condition so that the sulphides of or the Ray Ra will be bea a boon to it IL There are some subsurface indications that the two great companies will be operated as hand and glove to each other and Los Angeles capital Is Invested In both In fact a large largo part of the stock Is owned by Los Angeles An eles people Although both of these vast ast deposits which are within fifteen miles of or each other result from the same disturbance of the earths crust the up upheaval upheaval of or the London mountain range rane the mineral character of or the Ray Rao is like that of the Utah Copper while that of the closely resembles the character of the great Bisbee district in southeastern Arizona both lying in the carboniferous limestone Both the Ray and the London are beyond a rational doubt very verJ great properties but the Lon carries a and perfectly ore and will wUl there therefore therefore fore forc produce its finished copper at a low lower lower lower er cost than any concentrating mine can possibly do Working together these two properties appear to be easily capable of producing pounds nd of finished is copper ina a year ear without crowding the mourners and they the can do that in my mJ judgment at a cost on that scale not exceeding S cents a pound |
