of facts and principles The Democratic narty party now as in inthe the past deserves deser es the support of all the citizens in the state It has always stood tood and legitimate l poll poli politics tics and against agai st the reactionary course of unwise leaders in the Re Republican Republican Republican publican party and the efforts of those Ui se who have pave insistently sought to inject religious and other improper influence into political discussions and party conduct While hile it makes no war var yar upon conscience or creed but upon the contrary is the personal rights t including cl di the rights of con conscience conscience conscience science and freedom of religion yet it demands that there shall be no union of church and state and that not only in letter but in spirit the provisions of the constitution embodying this declaration shall be observed We believe in the complete separation n of church and state as expressed In our constitution and we pledge ourselves to a faithful and conscientious observance ance of the same and in this connection we declare that the election to o the United States Sta es senate senat of an apostle of tt the e dominant church was Pas imprudent and unwise and has inflicted upon pon this commonwealth of Utah and its people injury from which they cannot recover for many years to come comeIn comeIn comeIn In this connection also we n a condemn and denounce both the Republican and American parties of Utah The former for its impassioned appeal to all Mormons without with ut regard to former political affiliations to vote the Re Republican Republican Republican publican ticket and the latter for a similar appeal to all to vote the American ticket We denounce each of said parties for the meth methods methods methods so adopted and characterize all an such methods as incendiary revolution revolutionary ary and subversive of the highest and the best interests of the common commonwealth commonwealth wealth and the welfare of our people The Democrats of Utah are proud of their state of its founders and of the industry patriotism and intelligence of its people With a population possessing qualities and habits which mark marl in such preeminent degree the people of a progressive commonwealth and with a state enjoying such boundless and varied resources the progress and prosperity of Utah should now be greater than it is and its influence in the world should be stronger The reason for this retardation of the states growth is obvious At the thedoor thedoor thedoor door of the Republican party lies much of the shame for the unfortunate condition now existing in Utah We Ve demand that the causes producing these conditions shall be removed that local strife and bitterness shall shaH yield to toan toan toan an enlightened and progressive sentiment The great mass of the people of Utah desire peace and the maintenance of those conditions politically and relations socially that will win result in concord and in bringing into happy rivalry ri rivalry rivalry valry all that is best within all aU to the th end that our state will occupy a proud and progressive position in the nation We Wre view with serious forebodings of danger to our state the recent recen at attempt attempt attempt tempt of the machine to influence one of the judges of this state in the interests of Republican machine politics We IVe favor such national legislation leg as will compensate those who vho served in the Black Hawk and In the Indian wars for their heroic and invaluable services We recognize William Jennings Bryan as the greatest living private te citi citizen citizen citizen zen and the leading exponent e of the principles of true Democracy And recognize recognize recognize nize in n him a fearless leader justly entitled to the absolute confidence of every loyal citizen and we hereby Indorse him as the logical candidate of the Democratic party pa ty for the next president of the United States We believe in the equality of all men before the law and assert that all allmen allmen allmen men are entitled to the full enjoyment of all civil and political rights We hold with William Jennings Bryan that the is a citizen as well as a laborer and must have time for the study of public questions if it ithe he is to be an intelligent sovereign TO drive him from his bed to his task and from his task to his bed bcd Is to deprive the family f mily of his company society of or his service and ane politics of his influence Holding as true this statement of fact we urge the strict enforcement of the present law and its extension to meet all reasonable demands of labor We Ve demand that the legislature shall pass laws establishing reasonable maximum rates of charges for transportation of passengers and freight for correcting abuses and preventing discrimination tion and extortion in rates of freight and passenger tariffs by toy the different railroads and other common gommon carriers in the state and shall enforce such laws by adequate penalties We Ve pledge ourselves to support the cause of irrigation in the west and insist that laws be enacted which will grant easements casements for public imbUe roads canals and reservoirs within forest reservations the same as now fixed by legislation upon the public domain We pledge our candidates to enact such laws at the thc coming session of ot the legislature lattire as will put into effect the constitutional amendment concern Ing tho the initiative and referendum We approve the plan so earnestly advocated by the Democratic party in the past that United States senators be elected by direct vote of the people and we pledge ourselves to name at the next state Democratic convention our candidate for United States senator We are unalterably opposed to partisan politics politIes and management manag ment being injected in j into the administration r io of our public educational institutions r We favor the encouragement by law of arbitration between capital and labor We Te declare in favor of public ownership of public utilities And AmI upon these the foregoing declarations o ot of principles the Democratic p party of the
