Show DISCUSS WORK AT BANQUET T TABLI Visiting Methodists Respond to Unique Program of Toasts REGULAR SESSIONS HELD BISHOP NEELY ADDRESSES FOR FOREIGN FOREIGN FOREIGN EIGN MISSIONARY SOCIETY Yesterdays sessions of the Methodist conference now in progress at the First Methodist church closed with a banquet for Bishop Thomas Thomos Neeley and the visit visitIng vI visiting It Ing clergymen and their wives last even evening evenIng evening ing which proved to be one of the most important meetings of ot the convention Over seventy were seated at the tables and the speeches which at ordinary ban banquets banQuets banquets would be called toasts were all in relation to the work of ot the Methodist church Heretofore it has been the cus custom custom tom torn to hold a sort of ot executive session at some Bome time during the conference when only the clergy and the leading workers should be present Last nights affair was designed to take tako the place of such sucha a meeting and hence the toasts were relating to the lines of work outlined and the plans for tor the future The affair was In Ia charge of ot Dr and Mrs H J Talbot and Rev and Mrs Benjamin Young The long tables were arranged in the church parlors on the lower floor and the rooms were beautiful beautifully ly decorated Dr Talbot acted as toast toastmaster toastmaster toastmaster master and he had bad prepared a general theme calling it What of ot the Night Applying Appling it to each toast separately the responses were as follows As seen by our oldest missionary E E Mork of Mount Pleasant From the Seats of the Mighty by R B H Johnston of Provo One Who Is Solidly Up Against It by S P Cook From One of the Protest Protestants Protestants ants by Mrs Sirs B S Potter of 01 Evan Evanston Evanston Evanston ston Ill III the secretary of the Womans Home Mission society As Judged From the Metropolis by Rev Benjamin Young of Salt Lake The Morning Moning Mo Cometh by D L Helmick From One Whose Dio Plo Diocese Diocese cese Is the World by Bishop Neeley Following the toasts some musical num nurn numbers numbers bers were enjoyed and an hour or so spent socially Bishop Neeley Speaks Two sessions were held during durin the day time the first being largely of a busi business business business ness nature The matter of the progress of each church in the diocese was dis discussed dIscussed discussed cussed and the character of the minis ministers ministers ministers passed upon Rev H J Talbot read reada a report as superintendent of the Utah missions Bishop Neeley who was to have spoken at the meeting was unable to do so but gave a brief address in inthe Inthe inthe the afternoon At this gathering the Foreign Missionary society held an anniversary meting meeting m o presided over by Mrs Frank J S Laben Following the opening prayer and music Bishop Neeley arrived and in a few words spoke to the women of the value of their work In the missionary field He told of ot the need of greater funds to carry carryon on the work in South America which he stated was the most expensive place to live in In the he world The city of or Buenos Ayres he characterized as a city of the most phenomenal growth a con condition condItion condition to which is due much of the high cost of 01 living He Ho asked especially for tor help for the education of the girls of South America and closed with an ad admonitory admonitOry admonitory monitory word in regard to the great opportunity the women of this society have within reach Mrs Young Honored Bishop Neeley was followed by y Rev Re Dr King superintendent of the Nevada missions who spoke briefly on his work there The music of the afternoon was furnished by b Miss Rubella Rathbone who gave ga e some vocal selections The only business put through was the election of or Mrs Benjamin Young as president of the local society of foreign missions The meetings scheduled for today are area a devotional service this morning to be by a short business session for all In attendance The Womans Home Missionary society will hold Its anniversary anniversary anniversary sary meeting this afternoon when Bishop Neeley will address the gathering The Tho board of education of the church and the aid and Sunday school socie societies I ties will have hare charge of ot the evening meeting and an address will be delivered by Dr P J Maveety of or Kansas City I |
