superannuated teachers In the early part of the morning the tLe tl e president went through the ot the registrars office At 1130 1180 he ho addressed the University students and after luncheon spent the remainder of ot the day looking over the records of the registrars office The inspection of the University records consisted of ot looking over the registration on cards caros of ot the students to determine the number of ot regularly registered college st the number of ot special students the number of college students who are do doing doing ing ins college collese work and have conditions in their preparatory work and the number of students doing special in medicine and law lav In These two de do departments departments are being scrutinized more thoroughly than the other departments on of ot he the number of ot these stu students students students dents which semiprofessional se SChOOl are turning out In his bis address to tho the students he said eaid in part partIn partIn partIn In the new calling which I hove token up my duties have Veen een chanted from those of scrutinizing one body of students to that of scrutinizing many bodies throughout the United States and Canada In my investigations I have found that groups of students are similar in I more respects than they are dissimilar In looking over this as assembly assembly assembly I could not ten whether this group was from Massachusetts Mis lIls Missouri MIssour sour or California In the several jol j lege logo districts ono one will find that the i Individual students are much the Same ame As I go o through the country I find tind that the presidents of the t e different colleges I declare that their students are the best bestin bestIn bestIn in the land but from close cioe Investigation I Ione one finds that they are all about equal and this is the great blessing of ot this great land where there is no social re religious religious religious or class elMs distinction Too Many Doctors The Carnegie Institute for the Ad Advancement I van cement of Teaching was started five years years ago by the donation of Ly LY Andrew Carnegie This institute was thought necessary from tho fact that in inthis InthIs inthis this country unlike the countries of ot Europe there was Vas no plan whereby a professor who had spent his best beat days in 0 a chool school room could be I Ifor for his efforts whon old age came The i plan was to allow faithful professors prof to retire with dignity peace and comfort and receive reC Ive a part of ot their salary as a aright aright I right rather r than as a favor I This plan however has changed the tbs aspect aspot of the institute Into one of scrutiny scrutIny iny my in order to determine what colleges are entitled to the privileges of the fund In tho the United States and Canada there are over 1000 schools called col cal colleges colleges leges Of this number I regret reb et to say that over the greater majority of which are in the United States are only colleges in name This is especially true In the eastern end and middle states Ohio is the college state In the union In Inthis Inthis this scrutinizing we deal not with the professors but with the Institutions s sand and by this work we Lope to make a no greater union and a 0 greater educational I commonwealth The greatest harm of ot the colleges is found in the semiprofessional schools especially that of medicine The United States has more than twice as many medical schools as the whole of ot Europe California alone has as many medical schools as Europe and al although though it is advertised as a state where health is 13 abundant it has five times as many doctors doctor as the thickest populated populated populated section of ot Germany These doc doe doctors doctors tors who are turned out for mercenary purposes only are daily dally preying on the poor Education a Necessity Twenty years ago a man who knew the practical workings of any one sub subject jet jeet was regarded as the best man The ThedY Say dY t y has lias passed when the uneducated man can make a success in the big things of this world It is the man with a a technical education the one ed educated educated in his own language literature and history the one who can sit and converse conver e intelligently with intelligent men and women who draws the big salary and mak 3 the greatest suc sue success cess ess in this world If It I 1 can leave ont one on impression with you I will feel fee fe repaid That impression is that the boot boat are ore those tho e which deal with the subjects
