Dunne construed the passage of the certificates and public policy proposition pr position as a victory for mu municipal municipal municipal ownership but expressed his disappointment over oer the Chicago voters that has been held in many years The vote was much larger arger than had been ex expected expected expected and all day the contest for and against municipal ownership was bit bitterly bitterly bitterly t terly fought Party lines were largely Ignored and the eligibility of candi candidates candidates candidates dates depended more upon their atti attl attitude attitude tude toward municipal operation of street cars and high license for sa saloons saloons saloons loons than upon their party records Of the he aldermen who were elected today Mayor Dunne claims that nineteen are avowed champions of ot municipal ownership and that he will till have much less difficulty difficult In passing measures relating to that doctrine through the city council than has been his fortune heretofore The faction op opposed opposed opposed posed to municipal ownership declares that they Ute still hold the control of the council and that Mayor Dunne Duane will have no rio greater success in the future than he has had in the past Saloon Question Besides the question of municipal ownership the issue was made iti th many of the aldermanic contests on whether r the saloon license of the city shall be or 1000 The low figure was in existence up to March 5 when the city council by b o a close vote and after a ahard ahard ahard hard fight passed an ordinance raising the amount to 1000 The number of crimes which have lately been com committed committed in this city against women has caused many people to believe that the crimes are attributable to the large number of saloons and they favored the increase in license as a means of decreasing the tIle number The liquor interests made a strong fight light against st every alderman who was up for re reelection reelection election ejection who had voted for the license se sest of 1000 Of the fifteen men against st whom they put their influence twelve t fe were elected and three defeated Of Df the nine aldermen up for reelection
