Show IS SWEDISH WE DISH SH CRITIC GIVES HIS VIEWS Judge Fudge Harold Earold Solomon Talks of Ju Juvenile Juvenile venile venue Court Work W Olk in Amer Amner American American ican Cities HE PRAISES AND CONDEMNS WOULD CURB MANY PREROGATIVES PREROGATIVES TIVES OF THE LAWYERS I Judge Harold Salomon of ot Sweden who has spent t several days in Salt Lake L ke studying the workings of the Juvenile court law last evening gave his opinion of the Ule work done here He said eaId saidI I have been greatly interested in inthe inthe inthe the work done not only here lere but in inthe inthe inthe the cities of the United States in which I have observed the courts As I have viewed the work I find that done in inZ Z Denver enver and in Salt Lake the best so 50 far seen I think all has been highly commendable but in Washington where I r i visited first the law is not yet in good working order and in New NewYork NewYork I York and Chicago the men are so dif different different different ferent from Judge Ben Lindsey of Denver and your own Judge Willis Villis Brown BrownI I 1 think Lindsey is in many respects the most wonderful man I 1 have ever seen And yet I 1 know that his meth methods methods methods could not be used without great change in Sweden and I question if it would be well to use them altogether anywhere For instance I think there is a tendency to encourage a freedom in wrongdoing and a certain boldness which would not be tolerated in Swe Sweden Sweden Sweden den in such a class of boys Our idea is i to make them different if possible and we hope to lift them out of wrong wrongdoing wrongdoing wrongdoing doing There is too tob much of a feeling of equality between the judge and the boy boyS S He Was ji I remember how amazed I was in Denver Denyer when as I entered the lobby of the hotel for the large dinner given there at which over a hundred of the prominent citizens were entertained I Iwas Iwas Iwas was greeted by a crowd of Judge Lindseys Lindsey s boys of the juvenile court with the surprising question the matter with Salomon And the equally surprising answer Hes all aU right It was the first time tune I had heard the expression and I felt that it was wasa as a 3 strange greeting from such a crowd of boys to man I should have thought it more in keeping for me to have havo asked what was the matter with them and have answered that we hoped hoed to have them better Has Gained Ideas I 1 shall take back many ideas which I hope will be of service in my coun country country country try I shall try to have the work done more on the individual lines as it is here As Ai it now is in Sweden our work Is done too much on what you might call paper lines that is the judge does not come in direct contact with the offenders neither children parents The cases are written down and shown to him and he does not have the hu human human human man interest in the child that I find here especially in Salt Lake and Den Denver Denver Denver ver verI verSI SI I find that the tho best thing in your law is the adult delinquency clause I find to a great deal of good in having haing your juvenile age extended to 18 iS In our country so far we are treating boys from 15 to 18 as criminals and andas andas andas as such they are generally sent to prison But Bu t we can send them to an institution if we so decide where boys can be cared for Criticises the Lawyers One serious criticism I would make and that is not on the court but on the lawyers here I am glad I have hae seen it only a few times but it is one thing that would not be tolerated in our country and that is for lawyers to appear with the boys and try ty t y to take the boys away from front the influence of the court If the court is to help the boy the lawyer should understand it and lend his help instead of by clever questioning endeavor to divert the trial and shield the boy from front the just dealings of the court This will make a boy try to invent clever speeches himself to outwit justice and will defeat the very end of the court which is to help the boys to become honest men Then too I doubt If it is well for forthe forthe the court room to be 00 open to visitors and especially for the trials to go on in the presence of other boys I think it is not well for the one boy to hear the testimony in another case and to witness the decision I should have havethe havethe havethe the boys who are awaiting trial and their parents in another room and I should never let a lawyer talk with the tile boy either before or during his trial I have visited many man of f the homes which are under the care of the pro probation probation probation bation officers and I find different con conditions conditions among your poor classes s They are much better situated here than in Sweden In our country all the poor POol live in tenements although efforts are arc being beng made to make more habitable tenements In your country especially here in Salt Lake I find the poorer people live in separate houses which Is much better for them Judge Juge Salomon will go o from here to San Francisco 0 and down to Los An Angles Angeles Angeles geles and back to the east cast by way of the Santa Fe He will spend in all some four and a half months In the study of the work worl |
