Show WITHSTOOD THE TERRIBLE SHOCK Modern Steel Structures Not Damaged by Earthquake Ex Except Except Except for Cracked Walls WOODWORK RUINED BY FIRE WALLS STILL STANDING IN GOOD CONDITION CON San Francisco April 21 A trip through the burned districts or of San Francisco today revealed a scene of unspeakable able desolation From many points on Market street far as the eye could reach in any direction there was nothing but skeleton walls waIls and derIng ruins It should be borne in mind that San Francisco was wa not de destroyed destroyed destroyed by the earthquake While Thile old buildings in that part of the city which stood on made ground east of Mont Montgomery Montgomery Montgomery gomery street and some of that district lying south of Market street it is true suffered from the shock it was fire that wrought the great devastation and wiped out the entire business section and probably half of the residence sec see section section tion of the city Withstood the Shock The great modern steel structures were w ere practically uninjured by the earthquake except for cracked walls waIls and displaced plaster All AIl these great structures of course subsequently were utterly ruined by the flames so far as the interior construction is con concerned concerned concerned but the walls are in most cases Intact The most notable cases of practical practical practical immunity from the shock were the St Francis hotel the Fairmont hotel the Flood building the Mills building the Spreckels building the Chronicle building and scores of or other modern steel structures Mint Building Unharmed p The branch of the United States mint minton t on Fifth street and the new postoffice post office t at Seventh and Mission streets are striking examples of the superiority of the workmanship put into federal buildings The old mint building sur surrounded surrounded surrounded rounded by a wide space of pavement was absolutely unharmed Not even the few palm trees which stand on either side of its broad entrance were withered by the flames that devoured r everything around it Postoffice Suffered Little The new postoffice building also was wasA A virtually undamaged by fire The earthquake shock did some damage to the different entrances to the building the walls are uninjured Every win window window window dow pane of course is gone as they are in almost every building in town but the government will be able to re reume reume ume Fume postal business Immediately The Fairmont hotel while seriously dam damaged damaged damaged aged in the Interior Is left intact as to the walls and the management has of offered offered offered space in the building to any of the various arious relief committees that de desire desire desire sire to house the homeless or to store supplies in those parts of the building |
