Is the hope of Mrs Caldwell Caidwell expressed In her letter to the r real estate men that from the sale of the property enough money be realized to carry on the defense of of Mr The house will be of to the day of the killing Dr Varela and his wife wite had been guests of the Plaza hotel of Torreon Mr Ir and Mrs Caidwell who live at Jimulco a near by town had been stopping at the hotel for only a af fw f da days s before the affair On the afternoon of th the day in ques question a thin tion Mrs Irs Caldwell was sitting in her room which opens onto the balcony of the hotel SeeIng Mrs Irs Varela pass Mrs frs attempted to speak to her This Mrs Varela evIdently took ns as an insult reporting it as such to toler her ler husband The doctor In turn called nt at room and there her using vile fIe and profane language Mrs Caidwell reported the affair of the afternoon to her husband when lie he returned to the hotel shortly before 6 Mr Caldwell was an angered hered by the words used to his wife but decIded to let the matter drop I In the evening just after dinner lr and Caldwell Went out onto the balcony bakony to listen to the band which plays in the plaza of the town towne every e evening While sitting talking I Varela suddenly appeared on the U scene sene With a wild Mexican cry and an oath he rushed at Mr Caidwell meanwhile jerking from under hi his coat coata a vicIous dagger Before Mr Caldwell could rise to defend himself Varela had Imn cut him severely about the arms and chest hest Followed to HIs Room Escaping finally to his room which opened onto the balcony Caldwell Caidwell
