REMEMBERING THE MAINE Tho The House House Hous of Representatives has gone upon record as favoring the rais raising raisIng raising ing of the battleship Maine and has passed a bill with that end in view If favorably considered in the Senate the remains of the vessel will be removed from Havana harbor the bodies of the dead removed from the th wreck and in interred interred Interred in the Arlington cemetery and last but not least by any means the cause of at the disaster will be ascer ascertained ascertained ascertained If It the explosion came from within it was an accident if from without the ship was blown up by the Spaniards Both theories have been discussed for tor a number of years with no possible way of ascertaining the truth unless Congress should order the wreck raised Now that the House has passed the bill it is to be hoped the Senate will do likewise and antI settle the vexed question for tor all time Some of those who believe the explosion explosion explosion sion came from the inside and amI was purely accidental also hold to the opinion opinion ion that this country coun ry should not have I waged war against Spain and enabled Cuba to gain her freedom They also claim that in case the theory of acci accident accident accident dent Is established it will put the Unit United United United ed States in a bad light for having used the incident as a pretext for humiliating ing Spain We hardly think so The dons had it Cuba had been devastated and desolated desol ted by an almost perpetual conflict and this country would have been compelled to interfere sooner or later The Spaniards were not fit to govern and refused to release the Gem of the Antilles from their clutches The blowing up of the Maine while It doubtless hastened the chastisement ot of Spain was not the sole cause of at It The war had to come
