the fair tal something fifty years ago became a recognized public Institution The first firt two days the te weather wether was anything but pleas pleasant pleasant ant but in spite sie of ot the rain rin and the leaden skies the people turned out by thousands During the last three days the weather could hardly have been Im Improved Improved proved upon In the mellow sunshine that flooded the great we want w nt them ti m to know that their efforts are not unappreciated a AN AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN Chairman Ashby Snow of ot the Demo Democratic Democratic cratic city committee sounded a real campaign note when talking Informal Informally ly h to members of ot his committee he said sid that the Democrats this year should pitch their fight on an aggressive aggressive sive plane that their position should be an affirmative rather than a nega negative neg negative tive one There is not the slightest doubt that jf Jt t all al the people of ot Salt Sal Lake City who have just reason for forS S dissatisfaction over Oer the te conduct of ot city affairs by the American tion ton would rally raly under the Democratic banner the Democratic ticket would be triumphantly successful The Herald Herld believes a majority of ot the voters oters will wi vote this year car with wih the Democrats We Wo believe beleve this because we have faith in the good sense the sourd Judgment of ot the people of ot Salt Sal Lake Lak City Two years ago numbers of ot them allowed themselves to be de do deluded deluded by the cry cr that the only way to defeat tho the Americans was wa by voting the Republican ticket It I Is difficult to believe beleve that the te leaders of ot the Re Republican Republican publican party believed their asser aser assertion lion tion was correct But if I they tey voted In good faith the event showed that they were mistaken In spite spie of ot efforts that were almost unprecedented dented in lo local local cal cl political history the tho Republican candidate for the t e mayoralty was hope hopelessly hopelessly hopelessly lessly last in the tho te race He le carried Just one voting district distrct in the entire city Conditions have have not changed during the last two years There Thor Is I not ot as much reason for tor believing the Republicans cans n can carry car the tho tle city this year yea as asI J I there was two years ago Two years ago they were united aggressive con confident They had an abundance o ot of money and a it 1 perfect per ct machine This year they t ey are disorganized spiritless Their primaries were attended but bu slimly and their city convention was wasa a feeble echo of ot other oter days In their hearts the he Republican know they even a remote chance to elect elec their ticket They know kow they tey are beaten before a shot is fired The Tho battle bate then Is between the Americans and the Democrats The comparison Is between the records made by the te two parties partes in their stew stewardship stewardship of at the clys business business There are in the American party hundreds of clean fearless conscientious men mn m n who believe beleve they are fighting for a principle With Wih thorn them the The Herald has haR haRnO no quarrel But there are few men n In Inthe Inthe Inthe the American party unless they have some selfish interest to who will wi assert that the tho American AmerIca administration was superior in any anyway anyway anyway way to the Democratic administration Most of ot them when pressed freely treely ad admit admit admit mit that their party has made an ex cx execrable execrable record and that the tho record of Mayor Morris Moris and his Democratic col colleagues colleagues colleagues leagues was above criticism On merit meri therefore and merit meri should be the determining factor in the se selection selection lection lecton of ot city officials the Democrats are entitled to the suffrage of ot the pee peo people e epIe pIe To this end The Herald Herld appeals to Republicans and to Americans who place patriotism above party to Join with wih the Democrats in electing Richard P Morris Moris and his colleagues on the tho Democratic ticket And we can assure them If I they take tale this action acton of a city administration of which every ever citizen regardless of ot politics may be proud an administration that will wi be clean progressive businesslike and absolutely free from taint of ot any kind |
