| Show universal military service to work no hardship on young men of country R by ROBERT BACON fahmer secretary of state 1 there seems to be a popular impression quite widespread that universal military service would entail unnecessary sacrifice that it would take our young 0 men from their homes or their careers for long periods of time and that the training would extend over a long iong period such impressions are unfounded in fact there axe arc several proposed measures for the establishment lish ment of national military service none of these thes e contemplates a period of service of more than one year va the simplest bill and the one which seems to me to meet the requirements most satisfactorily is that drafted by lieutenant colonel moseley after consultation with the general staff of the army this bill provides that all male citizens of the united states must report during the cal lendar calendar year in which their eighteenth birthday occurs for physical examination for military training the training shall be as follows first period six months intensive training in n in military a ry camp or upon military ships the government paying all expenses the following year a further military training period of thirty days is required there shall be a proper credit allowed for military training received at school provided that such credit shall not aggregate in any event more than four months experience has proved that a six months intensive military training 0 will fit a man for the duties of a soldier inasmuch as due credit will be allowed for training at school and it is expected that such training will become general it if not universal in our schools and callec colleges es it will be seen that the actual period of service will be in nearly all cases considerably less than six months it would seem impossible that anyone could seriously contend that this would work a hardship |
