Show I S 5 THE STORY S OF THREE OPERAS i H Two new light operas and one old but that old one among the best and most popular pf of all the standard light operas Is what the Stewart Ste alt Opera company will serve the theatregoers who visit the Salt Lake theatre this week yeek A short insight into the story I of each of these operas will not come amiss particularly in respect to the new ones which have never been seen outside the larger cities of the east pre previous previous previous to this season J i iThe The Two Roses is described as a I comedy opera in two acts It is a I lyric adaptation by Stanislaus Stange of Oliver Goldsmiths delightful com corn comedy comedy edy She Stoops to Conquer As no play is better known throughout the world where the English language is I spoken it is hardly necessary lec to go into detailed description Suffice to say that the lyric adaptation of Mr Stange retains all aU the subtle qualities whether romantic or of the comedy type hpe of character with which the Goldsmith play is replete dainty and refined comedy studded with the musical gems Ludwig Englander has com corn composed posed dosed for It entitles The Two Roses M o 0 stand out as one of the greatest light opera successes of recent years The scene of the opera Babette is laid in Belgium during its occupation by the Spaniards under Philip II A spirit of revolution is rife against the invaders and upon this hangs the tho plot Babette is the professional letter writer of the village and falls faUs In love with Marcel a young oung painter but supposes him to be enamored of Vinette daugh daughter ter of Baltazar Mondragon and Mar Marcel Mareel lar larcel cel eel discovering that Baltazar is a spy and really in league with the Spaniards determine to outwit him In the second act Babette and her father appear pear as strolling players and when they learn that Baltazar and Vinette as Spanish envoys have just arrived at the thc Inn with the assistance of Mondragon they I plan an exchange of costume Baltazar and his daughter are persuaded to don the strollers clothes while V 7 n pIe and Babette appear as courtiers The act ends with the arrest of Balta Baltazar zar and Vinette as mendicants and the departure of Babette and he father as representatives of the Spanish gov government government government to interview the king of or France Prance at Versailles In Iii the last act both parties the real roal and the fictitious envoys meet at the court It looks very dark for Van T mple and his daughter when the king recognizes in Babette a singer whom he had long been seeking In admiration of ot her talents he promises to grant any quest she may make and when she asks pardon for her father and per permission permission permIssion mission to marry Marcel he readily as assents assents assents thus bringing the opera to a happy conclusion Dorothy Alfred Colliers Centers Doro Dorothy Dorothy Dorothy thy dainty and demure denture book and lyrics by B C Stephenson Js is the tho comic opera that is more familiar to music lovers than the other two of the Stew Stewart Stewart Stewart art offerings It is in three acts and its story is that of the daugh daughter ter of a foxhunting English squire who dons a peasant dress and at the village inn serves the landlords customers She falls in love with a gentleman whose horse porse has lost a shoe shor Dorothy is accompanied by a friend who masquerades with her and who also falls faIls in love with a customer The two girls give their lovers two rings which the lovers swear never to part with and nd the same evening present them to two grand ladies at a ball ban which ladles ladies are no others than their sweethearts of the morning now clad cladin eladin cladin in their legitimate raiment The Tha two gentlemen In the middle of the night play at burglars and bind the tho squire in his chair and rob him Dorothy dis die disguised disguised guised in male attire challenges her lover to fight a duel and the being accepted displays arrant coy cow cowardice ardice thus making the denouncement and inevitable explanation easy and natural |
