| Show FIGHT IN OGDEN Plans Being Laid to Place an i Independent Ticket in inthe inthe inthe the Field THE SLOGAN CAMPAIGN PROMISES TO BE LIVELY The latest development dev in the local political situation would Indicate that Ogden will have a fight in the fall tall campaign This fact tact cropped out yesterday esterday when it was virtually de decided decIded decided to place a full tull independent ticket in the field Ordinarily this would not b taken seriously but In the present In stance there Is at least some cause for concern Coupled with the independent ticket movement nt are some me of the most prominent Republicans and Democrats In the tho city anti and the party will be styled the party The rhe matter of ing an independent nt ticket in the field was brought p by br those Interested In placing Attorney J D Skeen In the fight for county attorney This latter movement has assumed greater proportions than was at first anticipated and the branching out to naming a full Cull independent ticket comes as a natural result Identified with this party will be found Democrats who are willing to make mak any sacrifice for the purpose of defeating the present Republican machine In Weber county The reformers will also al o attach themselves to the independent band wagon as will i also many man of the Labor party and the I disgruntled Republicans They are tired of graft and will wilt put up tip a set of men that thai will vili use as us their battle cry cr down with all kinds kin s of graft AH As one of the forms of grafting which the they point out and which seems to have been going on for some time they the point out the tIme county clerks office as It has been handled since David Mattson the pres pros ent incumbent took charge charbe Before BHore one of or the local clergymen took exception to the practice it was a common thing for that office of lice to solicit the performing of or marriage ceremonies s Close to one hun dred cIted ceremonies were ere performed by el ei ders who were deputies in that office Of Ot the amount they received for this work which was done dO f on the time the county clerk Insisted upon having one half halt of the fee which would net him from nw to 2 per pel marriage usually the th latter Another thing thin pointed out In the same office is the method employed ed by b the county clerk in collecting the annual campaign assessment it appears that the assessment which was levied last Jast year ear called for from the clerks office Mr Mattson put this little bill up to his em plo es and then when some of them left his hl service ho he collected the usual pro rata from their successors In Jn this way wa it is claimed that more than was Collected o although some of it was Paid Dald under pro protest protest test and none of the amount was returned to those who remained in the office but buta a short time after they the were called upon up n to pay the assessment Personally it dees not appear that Mr Mattson paid any portion of the assessment himself as asa was a the custom with his predecessor Charles Rollings Hollingsworth worth who paid one halt half the amount of from his own purse pur c in addition to standing the outside expenses as does Mr Mattson At least two of the other officers in the county building pay the entire assessment from own bank rolls and do not call upon their es for a cent Sometimes tIme the volunteer assist assistance assistance ance mince During the two years that Mr Mattson has been in iii office he has lost five clerks and is about to lose los ios the sixth which would seem to make his plan for collecting the campaign money mone an easy one Each Bach clerk in his office was called upon during the last year to pay from 20 to 6 20 as his share of the tte campaign fund levied on that office It Is in view of such conditions an a these trese that the independent ticket is about to be placed In the field and its support will come from people who are tired of ot such methods |
