Show . THE JUDAS 1SCARIOTS. The republicans are bitterly denouncing de-nouncing Senators Conover of Florda and Patterson of South Carolina for proving recreant to the party in going over to the democrats, by favoring favor-ing the admifioion to his seat of G8n. M. C. Butler, senator elect from South Carolina. Nothing too mean can be said of them. Since Thursday tho dispatches frm Washington have teemed with the Bhamefui abuso of these two senators, who are characterized charac-terized as traitors and Judases. That the senators deserve all of the abuse now being showered upon them, no one ought to deny. They are corrupt cor-rupt scoundrels, yet only fair specimens of the southern carpet-bag carpet-bag statesmen of the last ten yeais. But it is ungrateful and comes with bad grace from republican senators, and that party in general, to now fall to and belabor these corruptionists, flinging their crimes into their faces. J Tho charge may be true that Patterson Patter-son has bargained with the democrats to save himself from the penitentiary of South Carolina, lie is under indictment in-dictment for the crime of bribery, in securing his election to the United States Benate. The indictment gives the names of the lesiulators who were bought by him, and the amount paid to each. The list includes twenty-one names, and the total sum paid in bribes, $10,575, exclusive of what was siven to one state senator and three repraionta'tives with whom he had special agreements. agree-ments. A warrant has been out several sev-eral weeks for the arrest of Patterson, but he avails himself of his privilege as senator and claim immunity from arrest and prosecution. His party in the senate have upheld him in this, and with the republican journals have denounced the crimiual proceedings against him as persecution by political politi-cal opponents although the evidence of his guilt wns proh.xblo if not conclusive At least his party associates knew as much of bin guilt when tuoy cried democratic persecution, as they do now. It is not improbable though if such a compact has been entered into it is to the shame and disgrace of the democrats dem-ocrats interested that a corrupt bargain bar-gain has been made, by which tho bribe-paying senator agrees to vote with hia politic if opponents, or accept the alternative of trial, conviction and the penitentiary. But it behooves not the republican party to turn against this fallen senator and berate him for a less crime- than that of which they kuoff him to bo guilty wlion thty held him to their bosom and guvo him consolation aud comfort.
