Tbe Tribuno says: I The novel enterprise of transporting large steamers across the continent has been succoBt fully carried out within a few weeks. In October, 167G, George II. Bradbury, president of the Occidental and Oriental steamship steam-ship company, made a contract with Fletcher, Harrison and Co. of this city for the construction of two Bide wheel steamboats, each ol the following; follow-ing; dimeusions; Keel 210 feet, beam 32 feet, depth of hold 10 feet. Each was to have two boilers, one a vertical bojm condensing engine, with a cylinder 50 inches in diameter and 11 feet length of stroke. The contract provided that tho hulls, machinery and joiner work should bo built and fitted together here and that when completed the boats should be takoa to pioo anrl dhippcJ by rail to San Francisco and there put together again. In accordance with this agreement, Fletcher Harrison i, Co. early in March forwarded tbe hull and machinery of the firt vessel, and they have eince despatched tho hull and machinery of the second with joiner work for both. Tho boilers for tho second boat were dolivered in Jersey city ubout a week ago and are now on the way to San Francisco. The entire weight of the veseels and machinery as Ehipped was about S00 tons. Tiio four boilers were completed before they were shipped nud Liken on locfimolive trucks, whence they wire transfered to Loveli's flrtta, whereupon they were transported without chango to their destination. The hulls are built by Lawrence & Foulks and the joiner work wus done by II. B. Eels, Each shipment has been delivered in about CO days afier it left New York. The steamers are intended to run on San Francisco bay, one from San Francisco Fran-cisco to San Oelito tho other from Sau Francisco to San Ralael. No pains has been spared to make them in every respect as comfortable and elegant as possible and it is believed in point of speed they will be unequalled un-equalled by any boats ou the Pacific coast. |
