Show False Alarm. On Tuesday a wild rumor was started in tho 9th ward, that David Evans, a resident there, who had taken cold and was sick, was a victim vic-tim to the dread diicaso, smallpox. The report spread rapidly, as such thint-R rin. and his relatives were questioned on every hand concerning the supposed case of varioloid. But, the rumor-made invalid waa out working on tho day mentioned and yesterday very materially gave contradiction con-tradiction to the wide spread Btory. There was no occasion for iho rnport, which was started by parties who should have known better and who certainly should have mado further inquiry into the affair before giving currency to such an alarm, especially at this lime. Be sure you're right, next time; then go ahead and iecure quarantine; but do not unnecessarily create anxiety and suspicion. Don't bs too anxious to force things. |
