Show The Htiydeu .Survej.s, Washington, 2C The plans for the coming Benson's exploration by Prof. Hayden, have been arranged except in minute detail. The work will be conducted the coming year north of the Union Pacilic railroad, commencing along the fortieth para-lel para-lel explored by Clarence King, and continue north and west in the territories terri-tories of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Mon-tana. The corps will bo arranged in five divisions. The first a triangulating triangu-lating party will be under the direction direc-tion of A. 1). Wilson, who will carry forward the system of primary triangles iu theBumo manner as they were employed in Colorado. All the higher peaks will be located in this way. The western topographical division will be in charge ot Henry Gannett, andjwill explore the region of country from Ogden east and norlh-waid. norlh-waid. The eastern division will be directed by George B. Chittenden. This party wiil explore the country along the Sweetwater and Wind Piiver. The northern division will be under the charge of G. B. Be-ckler and will occupy the country about the sources ot Snake Puver and along t lie bordcis of the Yellowstone National park. It is intended to have the party reach the field by the loih ot May, where they will remain about five months. Each division of the survey will cover an area of about 10,000 square miles. Of the entire region to be worked and mapped this year but little ia known geographically, geographi-cally, and it is expected the retsulta of this season's work, will add much to our geographical knowledge of the Kucky mountains region. |
