Show Pence. The St. Louia Republican intimates that pennies are about to be circulated circu-lated in that oity. The sub-treasury has recoived orders to make correot change, and in order to allow of its doiug so, has been furnished with pennies. Until recently, in St. Louis, .as here, the nickel or tbe silver five-cent five-cent piece was the Bruallest coin in i I use and its use was often disadvant ageous in small trades. Tbe rule which governed tbe giving and taking of the five cents made a person owing thirteen or fourteen cents pay fifteen, if eleven or twelve, only ten. Now, the pennies, if they come into general uee aud reach Salt Lake city, will enable sin nil dealers to do the "square thing" and give customers the right change. But it will work a loss to j oaudy-Bellers and cake dealers, because, be-cause, under tbe old rule, when a child asked papa for a little candy j money the indulgent father could put ibis band in his pocket and give bis j pet no lees than five cents. Now he will be able to give him one, two or three cents, as he desires. The amount to the child will be tbe same as long as he gets bis ctindy, but the confectioner will soon observe a falling fall-ing ofl in bis net receipts, and his ''small profits and quick returns" will necessarily have to be multiplied weekly by two. The subject is a somewhat trifling one, but the cents in a small business add up to dollars, and there is a Bitisfaction to be derived de-rived by strictly honed dealers in knowing that they can deal justly and, besides giving correct weights, can baud over the exact change. It may be some time belore the pennies will reach Utah; but send 'em along. |
