By last evening's train from Golden there arrived in this city four men who were arrested Friday and Saturday Satur-day for an attempt at making and passing counterfeit coin in tho shape of silver half dollars. The prisoners are known as William Lucas, ThomaB O'Sliea, Owen Mooney aud John Monroe, tho latter being also known as Noble Rows. Lucas and Mjnroo were arrested in Golden on Friday evening about 0 o'clock, and the other pwo on Saturday, near Blaek Hawk. Some time since one of these men called at the hardware store ol v. Al. oarell, Lioluen, and attempted i to bargain for block tin, but as the' proprietor suspected the "purpose, noi bargain was made. Notice was given 10 Deputy Sheriff" Belcher, and a look nui whs kept for alter movements. Friday evening one of tlicso movements move-ments came to the surfuce. Lucas and Monroe were entertaining a number ol friends at Bawolski's saloon, and paid out $4.;,0 iu half-dollar half-dollar pieces, one ol which proved to be good. Tho other.) were base imitations, imi-tations, clumsy in desiirn, light in weight, and decidedly clammy to the touch. In fact, so unlike the respectable respec-table half dollar, that the wonder is anyone could be induced to take' them, even for beer. Bawolaki sue-1 pected his treasures, and instead of ! went over to the main street and made the matter known to Deputy Sheriff Belcher, who. in company with W. M. Sarell, soon made the arrests, alter managing, however, to witness a second attempt to pass the spurious coin. Early Saturday morn- . RAID WAS PLANNED on the scene of operations, a lonely ranch iu the foot-hills, twelve miles from Golden aud between Ralston and Coal creeks. The raiding party was made up of Sheriff Smith, Deputy Sheriff Belcher, R. D. Hail and L. Bawolaki, tho latter lat-ter going ahead ns "a - friend ot the family," to inform Mrs. Lucas what hid happened in Golden, and to advise the hiding of the tools. The good woman was surprised at the message, and innocently referred Bawolski lo the si. op, saying that the I men bad been at work there, but herself aud the children wero rigidly excluded, and forbidden to go near there or meddle with the surround-; ings. The place was searched by I the officers, who found moulds, a I part of the material used, but no dies. O'Shea aud Mooney had left the spot early Saturday morning, and, as the woman supposed, were bound for Golden. But their tracks were traced to RaUton crsek, and from thence to the Black Hawk road. They were overtaken at Dory hill. O'Sbea had four of the pieces in his possession, and Mooney thirty-lour. Yesterday morning tho accused were brought beloro Judge Jameson, at Golden, when they waivtd examination and were bound over to appear at the next term of the district court for Jefferson county. O'Shca's bond was placed at $100, and that of the others at $600 each. Lucas, at whose ranch the botch-work was done, has a good wife and six children, two of tho children (a son and daughter) being about of nge. They are spoken of as reliable and intelligent. in-telligent. O'Shea is also the head of a numerous family, is an old resideut of the mountains, and was at one time CDgagcd in making spurious gold dust. But little is kuownof the other two men. All four are now safely lodged iu our couuty jail. Denver News. |
