Show BLUE WING. Salt Lake Miniu Excitement For the past day or two there have j 'been hints and intim.itioi:s that something handsome had been struck in the mineral wny in Red Bulla canon, buck of Camp Douj;!:ia. By yesterday tho stories had priori from mouths to ears enough to ermite quite a vigorous breezs of exoitemiit. It I reminded ono of limes gono by to avg the hurrying to and fro, mid hear the inquiry for conveyances to carry people to the scene of the allegsd discovery, and for prospectors' imploments. One of the livery stables which kept saddle horses was soon unable to meet the demand UDOn it. and numbtirri of i-irrii-r,,, land wagons, containing speculators t and miners, were seen moving quickly in the direction of the cafloa. The mouth of Red Butte is immcdi ilely at the rear of Camp Douglas, and ; between two and three miles from ' Main street. The name of the claim which created cre-ated the sensation is the Blue Wing, located about a mila and a half up tho canon, in a sandstone formation. Indeed, Red Butte is made up of red sandstone; the wnlU are red sandstone, sand-stone, the hills are red sandstone, tho mountains are red sandstone, the creek runs through red sandstone, and about three months ol the year is red sandstone in a liquid form. The red sandatone in the city hall, store fronU, foundations, etc., of the city comes from the Red Butte quarries. Had any one said that a rich silver ledge existed in that canon i a year ago, ho would have beeu laughed at, but since the grindstones, grind-stones, stoue walls, grass roots and shrubs of Washington county have been found to contain silver in abundance and great richness, the theories of geobgisis have becu knocked higher than a kite, aud rocks sharps are at a discount. Tell a man who has hsard of Leeds that old gum shoes and ash heaps, are nature's favorite repositories for silver in iU virgin state, and he is prepared to believe you. Hence it was uo diffi cult matter to Sod scores of people who readily swallowed the story of the Blue Wing, and who were anxious to get feet in the first "extension." Assays of the ere were snid to indicate indi-cate a richness varying from $000 to $2,600 per ton in silver beside ; a handsome per cent, of le.ui and some copper. It was told tint the Walker Brothers had readily pvd $1,600 for 100 feet, auothar gentleman gentle-man bad been more fortunate in getting get-ting a deed for 100 feet for $600, while a third had obtained a still better bet-ter bargain. All of this being industriously indus-triously circulated helped to increase the excitement, which, however, had somewhat died out last night after paities who visited the claim returned to the city. . As to the alleged sales, wo cau state on (he authority of one of the firm, that Walker Brothers have neither purchased au interest in the Blue Wing nor visited the ground. These gentlemen are heavy mining operators, but cautious withal; and we cannot call to mind a single ouc of their investments that .exhibits anything of the "wild cat." It is probable that the other reported sales will turn out as tho above. However, it may be possible that a valuable mineral ledge has been discovered in Red Butte canon, and that others will be found there; but wc would advise ad-vise people to keep inside their linen over the matter. The canon, years , ago, was pretty thoroughly prospected, ! but so far as wa ever knew, nothing which betokened the existence there of a valuable mineral was found. The whole formation is opposed to the theory that the canon contains silver ledges; yet, as we say in regard to Leeds, the laws of geology and mineralogy min-eralogy do not always apply in Utah, and Red Butte may bo an exception to tin rule. Still, don't rush! |
