The Plymouth returned this evening from a cruise of thirty-six days up the (Mississippi riror, which will ever be memorable in the annals of the navy and: the places visited. No sea-going war vessel has been up the rivor for fourteen four-teen years. Demonstrations of welcome wel-come and delight, waving of hats and handkerchiefs, greeted them from nearly every plantation along the river, and At Donaldsonville, Baton Rouge, Bayou Sara, Vidalia, Natchez, Grand Gulf, Delta and Vicksbiirg, business was temporarily suspended, and large and enthusiastic crowds gathered to float tho national colors and fire salutes as Bhe approached. Delegations of tho most dis- tinguished and influential citi-. zens, headed by their mayors, went abroad and tendered the hospitalities hospi-talities ot their several cor prorations. Banquets, parades, dinuejs, drives, dances, Bpeeches, serenades and receptions re-ceptions were frequent features of'the trip. The fteral tributes, particularly at Biton Rouge, Natchez and Vicks-burg, Vicks-burg, were unparalleled. The greatest great-est popular demonstration whs at Vioksburg, where nearly 2,000 persons per-sons visited the ship in one day. At various places addresses were delivered deliv-ered teeming with loyalty, patriotism aud good feeling, all of which received re-ceived graceful and Fympatholio responses from Captain Barratt or his officers. |
