Show THE PENITENTIARY. AqoIIum- Kscuno of Convicts. Probable MunliM of Prisonor Harbison Cni'toi'. ', Soon after 3 o'clock yest.mlay after 1 noon seven convict escaped from the penitentiary, three of them Liuing hose who recently fled from that institution in-stitution after murdering Warden . Bergher. This time they huvo aiso, irom present indications, committed a numler. Tho news of the emeute aud escape reached the city shortly aftor tho occurrence, though the particulars were not known here until evening, and indeed then all of the facta could nut be S learned, the marshal and his deputies depu-ties being out in search ot the murderous mur-derous fugitives. It appears that one 0 unarmed man is kept in the yard d with the prisoners to give alarm in Ciiso of an attempted escape; and tho , regular guard, numbering four or five - men, including tho warden, stay outside and patrol on tho wall. , Yesterday, while tho outside guard were at diuner, the prisoners bound and gagged the inside watchmen. watch-men. They then placed a plank , , against the wall and climbed up to the guard quarters, where they found guns, pistols and ammunition. After arming themselves, them-selves, two of the prisoners let themselves them-selves down from the wall, in front of the house, while others went to tho j rear, thus having the gjard within i their power. At that moment Har-' Har-' rison Carter a convict whose good 3 behavior and trustworthy conduct had gaiucd for him the confidence ol 1 tho keepers, and who was assisting tho cook discovered tho prisoners, and attempted to alarm the keepers, when he was shot. The guard being aroused, found themselves at the , mercy of the desperadoes, and had nothing to do but gracefully submit. At the muzzles of their own guns they were marched into the penitentiary, and the gate locked behind them, when they wero tauntingly presented with the keys. The desperadoes then took what arms and ammunition they could find, and left, two of them riding rid-ing horses belonging to the penitentiary, peniten-tiary, and a third stealing a horse near there. The names of the runaways run-aways are the notorious Charlevj Williamson, horse thief and mur-j derer; James Cain, murderer; Chas. Patterson, horse thief and one of Bergher's murderers; Sam Willis, one of the Sevier stage robbers; Thompson Davis, Henry May field and William Kelley, horse thieves. A number of the prisoners did Dot attempt to go, though all could have gone, as well as those named. Among those who remained are W. B. Kelley and Phillip Shafler, the murderers mur-derers of Van Valkenbcrg ; Jack Beegan, Smith, the partner of Williamson, and others. The marshal and a large force of deputies, as soon as the news of the break was received, started in pursuit, pur-suit, and it was rumored last evening even-ing that they had overtaken Bix of the convicts in the mountains between Parley's and Emigration canoni. Another story was that they had them at bay in Emigration, but nothing noth-ing of the whereabouts of the men was known at the marshal's mar-shal's office late last night. Should they be found it is mors- than probable that aome of them will not be taken alive. The officers will have no child's play in recapturing the convicts, even ahould they overtake over-take them. Three of the runaways have already done that which will place them on.the gallows, and they will not hesitate to take the most desperate chances in order to save their necks. The officers are aware of this, and also of the fact that the fugitives are as well armed as themselves, as adept with the weapons, and have every incentive incen-tive to use them; hence it is to be hoped that the marshal and his deputies will take no chances, but go at their work cautiously', intelligently and safely. The man Carter is dangerously wounded, the bullet having severed the main artery of the arm and lodged in his chest. Last evening be was in a critical condition and not expected to recover. Since the previous escape when the warden was murdered, the worst characters in the penitentinry have been heavily ironed until a few days ago, when their shackles wero removed. re-moved. This is the result of the warden's kindness. |
